Speedo question on 89 F-150

My speedometer doesn't work, so I took unplugged the cable and spun the gear and the speedometer spun. Plugged it back in, and it didn't work when I drove it. Any suggestions?

If everything from the driven gear forward is working, its got to be the drive gear inside the tail housing (or transfer case if 4x4) where you disconnected the driven gear.

Good point...when he said he turned the gear I assumed it was on the tranny end....he might have meant the speedo head.....

It was the tranny end not the speedo head.

In that case its the drive or driven gear. The driven gear is the gear on the end of the cable. The drive gear is the ring type gear that fits on the output shaft.

Check the drive gear in the tail shaft or (transfer case if 4x4). Mine was working but reading really slow, the fiber drive gear was concaved in the middle... causing the speedometer to miss some turns as the weather got colder and contracted.

So does that mean that I have to take my transfer case out to replace that gear?

Check your driven gear first...make sure that isn't worn. You should be able to pull the tailshaft housing without taking the transfer case out of the truck. Remove the driveshaft. If its a slip spline driveshaft you should just have to unbolt the tailhousing. If its a flanged type driveshaft you'll need a puller to get the flange off.

don't forget to get some tranny fluid if you take the tranny tail or t-case tail off.... you'll need to top yourself back off...
