4.6l aluminum blocks. What were they in
Ok so im looking at swapping a 4.6l SOHC into my 89 ranger 4X4. Ive never really been around these motors, my dad has a V10 and my friend is pretty comfortable with them but anyhow. Ive heard that some of them where aluminum blocks and some where cast iron. What years and models would have the aluminum ones as that would save me wait. Also i hear that the design of the heads was better after like 2000 so would i want to get one of those. Over all just looking for what year and models would have the best motor for me. Also im planning on finding a 5 speed and a manual transfercase to go with this if that makes a difference on the wiring.

these blocks came in lincoln mk8s from 93-98 and cobra mustangs and merc marauders. the first ones were made by a co. overseas called teksid they also make blocks for ferrari. these blocks are sturdy up to 1500 yes 1500 horsepower. in 01 ford changed the design to lighter by80 lbs and extra ribbing in the weaker places. these are known as wap blocks manufactured in the winsdor aluminum plant. go out and pick you up a book called 4.6 liter ford engines , by sean highland. i have a 62 unibody shortbed that i put this engine in.(from a 95 lincoln mk8 and this book has been very valuable.

I have a 2002 F-150 with the 4.6. It has an aluminum block and head. I think the 2003 4.6's also had an aluminum block. I think Ford determined the aluminum blocks were too expensive and went back to the iron block in 2004 or 2005. My wife's 2005 Explorer has a 4.6 with an iron block.

Why not use the 5speed out of the stang? They are behind more power than the truck tranny's. There are also the 6speed tremecs that the Shelby's and the new '11 stangs will have.
Forgot about the 4.6L exploders, the Expedition thing is interesting, wonder if they just needed to get rid of some excess engines and dumped them into the Expy's?
