Success for 351m/400 build
My 460 turned out bad but now I have aquired a 1979 f350 4x4 std cab lariat and it has a c6 and a 400 that leaks oil. The truck is in good shape, rust free cali truck with fresh paint and the ranger package. What can i do to a 351/400 either one, to get some more power? I was trying to find a 71 400 with 400 ftlbs I might have a lead on one but by the time i redo the heads for uleaded and so on I might be ahead to rebuild one. What can i do for a good mannered driver to occasionally tow a trailer, drive and not be too loud or expensive? I am looking to spend around $500 in machine work and maybe $1000 in parts. What works good and where do I get it and I've heard that the 351 typically got 2-4 mpg better than the 400. I have owned both but the 351s were mostly manuals and the 400s were autos, apples to apples, is this true? If so I might be better off with a 351 since I don't need too much power I could tell no power difference in 351 to 400 engines, What has worked for you guys in the past.
