Turn Signals - sometimes they work, sometimes they don't

As you can guess from the title, I've got a problem with the turn signals in my 74 F100. They work sometimes and then, even within the same trip, they stop working. Also, when they quit working, it doesn't matter whether I try the right or the left signal - no dice. The hazards work fine all the time though.

My first guess, based on looking around at other turn signal threads, is that I need to replace the turn signal flasher. Any thoughts? Thanks guys!

the flasher is always a great place to start, could be a wire in the column also

Swap the two flashers around, if the hazards don't work and the turn signals do you found the culprit, if not i'd suspect the turn signal switch.

i would just switch the signal switch. 35 yrs is alot of wear and tear on that part. not hard to change and not too pricey.

I agree, swapping out the hazard flasher for the turn signal flasher is a good way to tell if the flasher is at fault.

Also check the fuse in the fuse panel. It may be broke on the side and vibrating, giving you an intermittant connection. Replace if in doubt. Could also be a loose wire or connection as has been described above.

Let us know what you find out.

if he needs to take the wheel off to do any work on the wiring, instead of screwing around with it, i would just change it. its not worth the hassle of playing with because its not very expensive and its not very difficult to replace. changing mine even got my horn working again. if the switch is working fine, then dont change it, there is no point, but from the wiring guys ive talked to, they say most of the signal problems are caused by grounds, bulbs, or the switch or any combination. and also, my flashers worked all the time, but my signals were intermittent. the turn signal switch to me is a wear item. after 30 years, you will have brighter signals with brand new connections. mine are as bright as the sun.

Thanks for the advice guys! I forgot to mention that I had already replaced the fuse. I'll try out the flasher swap and see what happens.
