I have a 6.9 in my 90 f250, it was running great running it daily to work and back 60 mi a day then i switched tanks made it maybe 5 miles and it died cold turkey on side of road; switched tank back to front got it started drove rest of way to work then it started surging and losing power really bad, on verge of dyin. Made it to shop and it ran like crap but at least it ran, i made it to the gas station and put 30 bucks in it half and half front and back, got back to shop added a little oil it has a fairly decent leak but not sure where from, ran fine most of the way home after sitting most of the day but started acting up again 5 miles away from house, then it died in middle of intersection had to push it out of the way spent 10 minutes trying to get it started made it a couple hundred yards with my foot to the floor then did it all over again, limped it a block to my house and it hasn't started since WTF!! I have checked most everywhere i can think of and havent found a fuel leak lifter pump squirts jet from in front of filter to the hood no prob, filter is full, cracked the injectors and got to where they had fuel leaking out of them, but it still won't start. Anyone have any ideas on this thing? Im ready to go get my old cummins back. It wont even run on starting fluid, if it was a gasser i would say no spark guaranteed, acts just like it, any help would be greatly appreciated i really need this truck up and runnin, to much not getting done on farm because of this crap.
Just a guess but you might have got a bad tank of gas or have water in the tank. I would try adding a quart of diesel kleen and see if that smooths it out. That's just a guess though, sure one of the more experienced guys can give you more advise.
i added a jug of 911 to each tank when i filled it up last but it was out of a tank we run semis out of at work, its the winter blend but it wont even run now so i dunno whats goin on
The water in fuel light has been on since i got the truck but i have changed the filter twice since november, is there something else i should of done for the water in fuel? It doesnt have the seperator by the brake booster that i can find either?
I really couldn't tell you, don't know anything about the 6.9 and would hate to give you wrong information. On my 7.3 the water light came on, I drained the water separator in the bottom my filter and it's ran great ever since. Hopefully Dave or starmilt will be around soon and they can give you better advice.
How long should it take to get the diesel clean into the system from the filter? And how long do ya usually let it sit? I appreciate the help guys im really stumped on this one and need the truck runnin bad
I not gonna be able to reply for rest of tonight, gotta feed cows, I forgot to mention that i am not getting any smoke at all when im trying to start the beast, it wont even run on ether, thanks again for the help
Are you getting any smoke out of the exhaust while it is cranking.
Is it clean fuel coming out of the schrader valve or has it got air in it makeing it like spitting.
ON that 90 it wont have a water seperator on the firewall and if they didn't change the filter header on the 6.9 when it was installed it wont have one.
What are the temps where you are located it is possible there is ice somewhere in the system usually in the lowest spots in the fuel line. Antigel additives does nothing for water or Ice. Can you get it in and warm it up if it is cold.
I see now where you are getting no smoke and it wont hit on either.
I am leaning on some ice in the system bottom of filter maybe or it sucking air since this stsrted when you switched tanks. or possibly gelled fuel in the Ip and injectors but the 911 should not let that happen. if you can run a fuel pressure test and test the volume it would help. At the schrader valve it should have 4 pounds minimum and 1/3 pint of fuel in 10 seconds min. you may have to warm it up and if it is ice or gelled it sometimes takes awhile. I have wrapped a tarp around them and used a space heater, fish fryer, even coals to warm them up. you have cows so a branding iron heater must be around.
Okay i, plannin on goin through the whole fuel line again for air leaks tonight and doin the pint test, I will put the heater and tarp on it to, my wife would kill me if i touched a hairdryer anyways so not a good idea
When I first got my 6.9 I had a problem with mine sucking air. Mine was from the tank switch valve under the truck. From what I was told then it is a bad habit of these trucks.
