Is there a way to check for a "diode leak" in the alternator?

I have had some issues with the batteries dieing on me over night. They are a year old. I have replaced the alternater 2 times and was wondering if there was a way to see if the alternator was "leaking" again?

Google Image Result for http://www.classictruckshop.com/clubs/earlyburbs/projects/trouble/alternator.jpg

Let me know if this link works.

The direction of th earrow is the direction of voltage flow, so if you put your meter on Diode test, and check for example Aux to DC out put, red lead on Aux, you should see a short. but if you swap directions you will not see flow.

Reading all of this again, makes me want to put a big ol capacitor on there to see if I clean the signal...

Yes, if your diodes are bad and your alternator is draining your batteries, the alternator will be warm to the touch.

First thing in the morning, when the engine is cold and off, touch the engine block. Then, touch the alternator. They should be the same temp. If the alternator is warm, its bad and draining your batteries.

My 'new' alternator from DB electrical was bad and was doing just that.

I rebuilt my alternator. I took the case and the rectifier down to the alternator shop and he check the rectifier and sandblasted the case for $10.00. He also checked my work. With the new rotor, and regulator/brushes, it looks super good and is perfect. Total rebuild $75.00.

Thanks SpringerPop for your help.....
