2004 F-150 - Rough Idle HELP!!!
#16
I have the exact same issue. 2004 f150 fx4 w/ K&N filter. After the engine warms up and i put it in park, the idle will flucuate and at times the engine will stall. It seems like the throttle body cleaning is the fix? My question is, what is this throttle body and how hard is it to clean? i'm capable of a little more than basic repairs. Could I do it or should I engage my mechanic?
thank you all for your time,

rough idle
04+ dont have an IAC valve. its all internal to the electronic throttle body. I had the same problem with my 04.
CLEAN YOUR THROTTLE BODY. i checked everything, and that was it.
my problem was running a K&N filter, oil leaked through and it didnt filter well enough and eventually clogged my throttle body and made it to where the throttle plate tried to stick at idle.

This most likely will be an ongoing problem as long as you are running a K&N air filter. If you want an aftermarket higher flowing filter use a dry filter such as Volant or S&B. They filter better and the oil that a K&N uses does not get where it shouldn't because you don't use oil in the filter.

Same problem here...
I had the exact same problem, searched all over for a solution, finally figured it out that it seems to be over-heating just a bit.
Accidentally found out (tip-o-the-hat to my wife) that turning the heater on with fan on full (4) actually makes the rough idle (and ultimately the check engine light) dissappear.
Flushed cooling system to no avail, but, the heater work-around does the trick (in winter of course).
If anyone has suggestions for what to do to keep the engine cooler permanently, please comment.

same isssue w/ K&N system
Having the same issue with an '04. I have had a K&N intake system on for about 60k miles with no issues - the truck just started with the rough idle last week. It has only happened twice - engine is warm (drove about 15 miles) and sitting at a stop light for about 1 minute - suddenly idle drops about half way and runs pretty rough - almost ready to die. Light turns green and I take off - she sputters for about 50 - 100 feet and cleans right up and runs perfect. No codes.
I will try cleaning the throttle body and post back if it was a success or not.

Me Too
Thank you all for posting. I am yet another success story from this thread by replacing my K&N and a deep cleaning of the throttle body. I went ahead and pulled it off to get a FULL cleaning. It only took 11mm socket on 9 bolts and about 20 minutes as previously mentioned. Very easy for anyone. Thanks again.

just started happening
got an 04 5.4L.
truck has stalled about five times since it was tuned up. truck runs fine at speed and i am running stock air filter. when truck is running and in park the motor seems to have a week idle. in drive or reverse with my foot on the brake there is a noticeable drop in idle and i can actually feel a little vibration in the truck. no codes are showing. the mechanic said they cleaned the throttle body when the tune up was done. this was the first tune up done on the truck at 130K. yeah i know i should've done more maintenance but the truck never gave me a problem.
any thoughts?

You guys rock ! I started having this exact issue a month ago my brother passed me down a 04 f150 200k. I took it to a local mech and the error code said it was a bad cam shaft censor , while it was there I had him pull the plugs and change them ( witch turned out to be a hole nother nightmare that cost me 400 dollars ) long story short he had my truck for 3 weeks got it back 2 days ago on the way to work bam the same damn problem I was so frustrated started searching and came across this thread. My brother did out a K&N in it so today I pulled off the throttle body and sure enough that thing was super gummed up I'm crossing my fingers I feel like this most likely is the issue. I will have to wait and see cause it didn't do it all the time but I have my fingers crossed. Drove it around the block and the regular idle was better atleast. Based on how dirty that thing was I feel good about this solving the issue You would think a mechanic might think of this but I guess it throws a code and they to right to that ! Thanks guys
