tires and snow chains

Although this subject has been covered to some extent, I would like to know what are folks experiences with aftermarket tires and snow chains. I am awaiting arrival of my new 285/70R17 Cooper STT's and have just installed 2" leveling kit. I understand these tires are supposed to perform fairly well in snow. However, ice, prudence and johnny law dictate that I have chains, so chians I'll get. Can anyone tell me how is this tire going to affect the fit of a snow chain, and am I relegated to the use of a cable-type? Are folks having any issues clearing the emergency brake cable, and if so, with which type of chain? BTW, I'm not concerned about ABS issues. I know from experience that ABS is just about worthless at slow speeds on ice.

I am also in your boat, as far as chains go. Been looking around on the net and see many different types. From what I gather diamond style are the very good. I would think that any chains that meet class s requirements will fit. Chains get better traction than cables (from what I read). Also, have you heard of those autosocks? Autosock .... brings you home Don't know if they come in the right size though. I am thinking of the socks for my wifes Volvo c30. My f150 Lariat 4x4, well I need some basic chains I think. Got stuck in the ice here this weekend, big snow and ice storm. Even in 4 wheel low it got stuck just spinning. I think I also need new tires.. Bummer.

Hey 85MD,
The most aggressive and toughest looking seem to be the V-bar chains but I don't think they're "s rated" and since others have already stated clearance issues on this site, I think that particular choice is out (but then again, with larger diameter tires and more clearance up front, I'm not sure). I know that "socks" are used extensively in europe but I think primarily for road use. At any rate they're certainly not going to do anything to enhance the effectiveness of an AT or MT tire. I like to hike so most of my snow and ice driving is in the steep narrow passageways of Southern CA mountains where 4x4 alone is just good enough to get you into trouble but not out. I'm still waiting on those tires by the way... its been like three weeks... they're on back order and no one will tell me when the factory is due to ship, yet they're still taking orders... doesn't anyone have a conscience anymore?
