Got a question for anyone that might know about laws concerning the use of mufflers on a diesel truck. On the IDI forums lots of guys are straight piping their old diesel trucks. I been thinking of trying this myself until I can afford to upgrade the whole system. I have been told Oregon has no laws against it... can anyone confirm that?

 

It is my understanding that all motor vehicles are required to have a muffler, diesel or gas. I know in the old days diesels were not required to have them.OBCB

 

Oregon Vehicle Code: 815.250 ( I have a copy, My good friend is a Sgt in OSP) NO requirement to HAVE a muffler. But the exaust system MUST meet noise requirement of no more than 94 dBA at 25 feet.

The turbo 7.3 sounds good without a muffler

 

That decides it then! I am pulling that nasty thing off tomorrow! I just so happen to have a decibel meter at work in my toolbox so I can even go check and make sure I am legal. Thanks Don!

 

If You had a turbo it almost works as a muffler only a few decibels louder. A few years ago at the Ford Garage in Tillamook they were moving a truck in the shop it had a jet engine whine to it so I asked the Manager what was up with it He said straight exhaust and 4in pipe from the turbo back and it was only a few decibels more then stock.

 

I am actually shopping for a used Banks turbo for it. Seen a few on ebay but just not the right price yet.

 

I dont know what the laws are for decibel ratings, but I wish my neighbor did.........I am sick of listening to him idle that clanking, stinking, loud Dodge Cummins every morning!...If I wanted to live next to truck stop, I would..........I love hearing that infernal racket while trying to get to sleep after graveyard shift.......maybe I should uncork the mufflers on my 460 and let it idle in the driveway for 30 min?

That is EXACTLY why I live in the country. My nearest neighbor is an 1/8th mile away! I imagine the deer and jack rabbits don't like to hear my diesel idling in the morning but it's only 5 minutes or less because I keep mine plugged in so she is nice and warm.

Truth be told my 75 with a 460... headers and dual exhaust is louder then my diesel.

 

1/8 mile is to damn close! I have two neighbors, the one east is 5 miles away, and the one west is 6 miles away! I can't see either one...........

It's really funny when relatives and friends come to visit. Most of them can't stand the quiet and the lack of people. They always ask how we can stand to live here.

Last year I shot my deer and elk off the front porch!

All the keys are in the rigs, and I don't have any idea where the keys are for the house................

 

For me it's always "how do you stand that drive everyday"

ROFL I got my deer year before last with my 9mm off the back porch! Only about a 10 yard shot but not bad for 4am and a pistol.

 

I don't have a "real" job so no commute for me I have my own company and do service work for area farms. 90% of the farms and ranches in my area can't afford to have full time mechanics but do have shops (go figure) so I do field work in the summer, and work in their shops in the winter.
