Do you think I got a good deal, fair deal, or did I overpay?

Recently purchased a 72 F-100 XLT LWB. According to the VIN, originally came with 360, but now has a 400 in it,with Ford 2V. Not sure if the C6 tranny is original.

Drove it a couple of months and just threw a rod. I guess I'll be buying a short block replacement, but may look around for a used 400.

The odometer shows 40K and I think it could be 140K, but of course it could be 240K or anything.

But the body is SO CLEAN for a 72. Looks to be original paint, peeling on the hood, elsewhere OK. Almost no rust anywhere(I live in Texas). One piece of side trim missing. NO CRACKS AT ALL ON DASH. Bed's in great shape. Drives straight, no slack in steering.

PAID $1800

I know I may have mostly just bought a body, especially if the tranny doesn't last. But a pretty nice body, I think.

I think you got a good deal but then just had some bad luck. Up here in the Pacific NW $1800 would buy you about the same truck. Just think though, you have an XLT, solid straight body and for awhile a nice 400 engine. My guess is that this was a 400M which is in my opinion the best, most cost efficient, readily available engine to replace an ol FE engine with. Good luck.

it's "probably a 400M". I thought there was only one 400. I thought the cleveland family consisted of the 351C, 351M, and 400 ?

Can you fill me in? Was there a "truck" version and a "car" version? Thanks.

smokey, if your truck is a 2 wheel drive and already set up for the 400M , you can find an engine for it about anywhere. A 400M out of a car or 2 wheel drive pickup will drop right in. The mid 70'S T-birds,Galaxies,Lincolns, etc. used the 400M. Just use your existing brackets as they are already suited to your vehicle. The 2 wheel drive trucks and big Ford cars use the same oil pan, front sump, they are exactly the same engine. The trucks use different accessory brackets than cars. The 4X4's use a rear sump pan for clearance of the front axle, but the motors will still interchange, you just change the oil pan, oil pump & sump, and the long main bolt stud combo that lets you hang the long oil sump from it.
