I would not pass on the chance to buy a flatty for $100.00 . Chances are 1/2 of them are cracked somewhere . You could always recoup some of your investment on selling spare salvageable parts or scraping out the dead cracked blocks and such . That is what I did . Took 3 engines to get a good block and sold off some spare parts . Good luck .

Here's my take, like we want to hear it again.... Mtflat is a very knowledgeable flathead expert, as he is one of the moderators on the flathead v8 website. When I read his post, I understood, because I knew him, that what he was referring to was that with his vast knowledge, and every little difference known by him, would fill a book, and not just one post. So what he did was he generalized the engine families based on year groupings. Now, moving on... cracks in flatheads are very common, but not the end of the world. Sleeves, or welding, are two simple repairs done by a competent machine shop. Lastly, I would get it for $100 anyway, just to have a spare carb and other little parts, heck maybe even another flywheel for redrilling for a modern T5 if desired.

Oh yeah, and the right side on top by the intake is a code for determining the year. Find those, post them here.

here are the numbers off that engine. 59A-B- 59A-60508 G23711 and 59 on the top of the bell housing. BUT the bell housing is cast into the block so i think that means it is out of a 48 car not a 48 truck??? there are 4 more engines out there and i will give the nuber to anyone that wants it because the guy wants to get rid of them. let me know.

Funny, but I didn't find this thread after my first post. I'm not on here every day. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression Mitch, I just didn't know where to start that day. Josh gave you a link to the best website for visual comparisons of flathead engines.

The numbers you have are the part numbers for the heads 6050/6049 You're right about the car vs truck engine IF the engine is a 48 - but the same numbers were used from '45-'47 trucks and '45-'48 cars.

No offense taken and no apology needed. The guys are too kind - sometimes I am a dumb *** without even trying....

It might help if you mentioned to the guys the general area where the engines are located. Good luck with your project!

If they were 230 miles in my direction I'd be interested. Should be some guys in the MN/WI/ND area that could use one. In fact you might share that info on the website I've included at the bottom of this post.

The partial bellhousing on the 59 is the same as the bolt-on half bell the 8BA/8RT's. Transmissions are the same and should bolt right up. I'm looking at putting a 59 in my 48 2 ton when I get it running - that or a 12v cummins turbo

I've got a few cracked and otherwise busted flatheads under my workbench. They're great for educational purposes. Every time I take one apart I learn something new. There are literally hundreds of variations - most don't mean much, but some are critical depending on the intended use.

If you really want to learn flatheads, here's the best site on the web. You have to register to post there but it's well worth it. Be sure to check out their techno page - it's crammed with archival info. http://flatheadv8.org/phpBB/index.ph...3bb6aa6bf5d399

I think it would be really cool to do a 12 valve but i just say that because i have worked on several of those. maybe when i know alot more about flatheads i would say them instead.

Mitch, I must admit that I was a little disappointed to see your initial angry response to MTFLAT's reply on your thread, but now I REALLY APPRECIATE how you have come back to engage in a reasonable and respectful dialog. My disappointment was that I could see the FTE forum breaking down into a worthless brawl of insulting exchanges. I have not been on the FTE very long, but I HAVE been on other boards that did go the way of insulting exchanges. Your measured and respectful response has earned my respect and I believe that you and many others who participate in the forum are collectively a valuable asset to the antique car / truck hobby.

In don't want to hijack this thread but I have a 1951 F-1 with the original flathead and three speed transmission.

The truck sat for years and appears to be in original condition - won't turn over so it is locked up.

I would like to make this engine and trans available to anyone who needs one. I am in Northern CA.

I also have the differential and front axel that I am not going to use.

If you need one of these let me know.

This is not a classified add - just want all to know that I have these items that I am not going to use.

I plan on putting a Ford IFS, a 4-link rear suspension, a 460 engine, and c-6 in my truck.

So, as you can see the parts I have available are just sitting and in my way.

Let me know if you are interested.

thanks

Dan
