Power Steering and No Brakes - Should be Easy, Right?
#16
this truck runs a hydroboost break system. dieselengines by nature do not produce enugh vacuum to use a vacuum assist booster. so we need to have either a big vacuum pump or get assist from a different sorce. powersteering pumps have the ability to produce large amounts of both flow and pressure and that is why it is used. If you need more help to clarify it let me know

OK, good to know this. Also time to review the manual. So, how bad is the braking if the belt fails while towing on the highway? Is this a life/death thing or can I get the truck stopped OK?

I use my truck to pull a horse trailer, and with horse injuries etc we have not used the truck in two months. Batteries were almost dead when I went to start it. Got it started, but the battery light is on, and now I don't have power steering or brakes. Can it be related to the battery at all? I had this a couple of years ago and had a new alternator put in for the battery and everything was fine. Hard to believe the alternator would go again in two years though
