My T18 Shift Stick Overhaul

My Shifter as in many 44 year old trucks with a 4 speed in them is sloppy, plus some knucklehead trying to shorten the shift pattern had cut about 8 inches off the stick but all that did was make me lean forward on every shift (which sucks) so I went trolling around some local junkyards for a new shifter, I finally found one that was correct and the guy only charged me $15 for it, but like any 44 year old shifter the pin notch was worn, so i headed home and proceeded to strip it, then I measured and welded up the shift pin notch in the ball at the bottom of the shifter, I then used an air cut off wheel and a file to re cut the notch to the proper size using the pin as a guide ( I made a pin from a hardened drill bit) I then cleaned, primered and painted the shift stick. It now sit's in my vice until the paint dries. Tomorrow I will install it and see how it works, I also sanded the original shifter ball that was on it and then polished it out, I also repainted the shift pattern on the top. Oh and just to let everyone know, I know where you can get brand new shifters for $58 plus shipping but they are straight (unbent) so you have to bend them yourself so you will need a torch outfit. I will post how my shifter overhaul works tomorrow.

P.S. NO ONE but me seemed to like my shifter extension on the old stick, a vintage wrench! Here it is!

Thanks Bill, I just read in another post your instructions for replacing the rear window seal, I am going to replace my rear window so the info will come in handy. The same knucklehead that cut the shifter down also hit the rear window glass with the sander repeatedly when doing the body work. Nothing I can do but replace the glass.

Looks nice. I wish my shifter was on the floor.

please read it again.... i made a mistake in the instructions, the window installs from the inside out, not the outside in.

Came out looking good, I really like the T18 tranny.. Use to have a source for the boot but the company has since gone out of business. Appreciate it when member post pic's and brief description of steps taken to replace, or repair items for these classic trucks that are no longer available, it's food for thought, sometimes one needs to use his/her imagination to keep these slicks on the road. Thanks again!

The 1964/72 truck catalog lists a boot specifically for the New Process.

There is another boot listed, but it doesn't say transmission it's for, except...it does say it's not for the transfer case shift lever.

Fits: 1965/66 F100/250 & 1967/72 (and 1973/76) F100/350.

C6TZ7B118A .. Shift Lever Boot / 7.28" x 6.30" at base / 5.90" to 4.08" taper on boot / 5. 19" high / Obsolete

If this is correct for the T-18, I found 12 of them NOS.

Bill, not sure the boot in the pic is the same as C6TZ7B118A, it has been on the truck all these years and assumed it is original. Certainly appears to fit desciption, I will compare measurement in the morning. It also has a metal ring incorporated in the rubber at the base and screws are used to secure the boot to the trans. hump.

Here is the shifter re installed in the truck, it really tightened up the shift pattern and removed alot of the slop. Another fix is to drill out the pin hole in the trans to fit the next biggest pin and then use a file to widen the worn out slot on the shifter but I thought I would try welding up the slot and regrinding it to fit the stock pin size and for now it has worked. You won't need a welder though if you go to next biggest pin, just a drill and a file. Hope this helps someone!

Hey Overland, you can adjust that high clutch pedel by loosening, moving and retightening the stop bolted to it. I did mine when i did the disc brake swap, i like it much better.
