why not fix the us underdrive unit or remove it?? why address the tranny if the other unit is the broken one?? what gears in the axles??

Star, it's a US Gear, not Gear Vendor.
klkr245, the US Gear is a very tough unit. I would think the problem lies in the electrical somewhere other than a problem in the unit. If your truck is screaming at 55 mph, it's likely you have 4:10 gears and the US Gear is an overdrive. They did come in either under or over drive. US Gear mounts ahead of the transfer case, Gear Vendor mounts behind the transfer case in 4x4's.
I would look at fixing the over drive rather than removing, the other options are an E4OD plus the computer or a ZF overdrive manual. Both are going to be expensive. I suppose you could remove the US gear and put in a higher gear ratio. 3:55's are common in these older trucks.

I have one truck with a USGear and another with a GearVendors. If you remove the USGear, you will have some mods to do on the drive lines. The front wheel and rear wheel drive shafts will have to be lengthened to the original lengths. I think it would be easier to trouble shoot the over drive. It is likely an over drive rather than an underdrive, but they made both. You may be able to call the manufacturer for troubleshooting help....they are nice people there.

An over drive that is stuck in normal would give regular rpm for the speed driven as if it was not there ... In overdrive it would increase the top speed with the same rpms ...
An underdrive would raise the rpms for a given speed in relation to the original rpm/speed capability of a particular engine-tranny-rear combination ...
So it seems that having the rpms high at 55 might be an indicator of an underdrive in the under mode ... Just like low range in a 4x4 ...
