E40D -dropping out of third -out of blue

96 powerstroke 4x4 with 180K miles.. trans was rebuilt and update before I bought it.
-little background: very cold days (near zero and teens) i noticed this winter that trans seemed sluggish off idle.. would 'groan' a little for lack of a better term while in first gear just off idle but would be fine within a mile of driving or so.. on warmer days (say 20's and above) trans would be fine.
-fluid is full and bright red, doesn't smell burnt..
-today on drive home in wet snow/rain storm out of blue trans drops out of gear goes back in drops out goes in.. this was in third gear.. give it throttle goes back in gear and then drops out.. luckily near home so put lever in second and drive a mile home

First time its done it, the od light didn't start blinking, could something have gotten wet to cause this?

actually any ideas helpful

thanks!

Sounds like your MLPS is on the fritz. Get a new one from Ford, they updated the harness to give it better protection from the elements. It's on the side of the transmission where the linkage connects.

I agree. The MLPS usually starts to fail by doing exactly what yours is doing. It won't set a code until after the trans fails. Get a new MLPS.

Changed out the MLPS and truck is slightly better but still has issue. made it a few miles before truck started jumping in and out of third and overdrive.

Accelerate slow and it will up shift all the way but it seems once you get to above 40 it starts up.. also if i shut off OD the tranny seems fine now in 1-3.. didn't want to push my luck by driving to far, its been pouring here all day so i am still wondering if something is wet or damp? My OD still doesn't blink and I have no cel lights on. also the trans groans when in first of idle regardless of temp now.. the groan to me (not knowing much of anything about transmissions) sounds like the pump or converted having trouble pumping cold trans fluid??? dunno
