Help! 6.9L Spewwing Oil

background of truck: I have what was a 1984 F250 Single Cab 4x4 6.9L (only 80k original), it now has no body and is on its way to becoming a swamp buggy (headache). I cranked it up to see if this "oil leak" problem my buddy told me about really existed. He said It was blowing the gasket on the oil filter and just pooring every last bit out. I purchased a manual pressure gauge, tightened the (#$#* out of the new filter i just put on it, dumped in my oil, and prayed. Started it.. and the oil pressure gauge pegged all the way around to 120psi and couldnt go farther (im sure it was higher), 10 sec later the gasket on the filter blew and there went several quarts before time to shut her down.

local ford dealer is baffled. says that the motor is "too old to pull up info on"
only plus: we got plenty of oil pressure!! ha

id appreciate anyone willing to point me in the right direction..

In the rear header of the oil cooler where the filter installs there is an oil bypass valve and a pressure regulating valve. I would suggest getting a used oil cooler rear header or complete assy. Then redo the oil cooler orings and gaskets on it and install it complete and see what happens. You could just get the rear header new big $$$$$.

The reason I suggest doing the orings on the replacement is purely peace of mind......

My photo link has the how too for oil cooler R&R plus orings.

something is very wrong there. I would vote for the CDR Valve as well. When i searched it came up more than a few times that it caused excess pressure. Pull it off and see what the condition is. If it is in the condition i think it is, it could very well be all gummed up but i am just a bit skeptical due to there being that much pressure, i would think it would force past the cdr valve "gum" first. It almost seems like there is a blockage right at the oil filter housing and the oil pump is kicking the crap out of the filter seal. Maybe take a look there too.

Better listen to plc7.3 the cdr lets crankase pressure build not oil pressure, it has to be the bypass.

If the CDR was the problem, the valley pan below the intake manifold would blow out long before the crank case pressure reached 120PSI.

I agree that its likely in the oil pressure regulator. Now might also be a good time to check to see if oil is making it up to the rockers.

I also think the oil pressure regulator has a problem.

And I have to also ask, how tight did you install the filter when you replaced it?

I go hand tight plus 1.5 turns with a filter wrench or mine leaks.

I have to wonder about the oil filter seal too. Our diesel ranger builds 100 PSI when cold rather easily and never spewed anything like whats been described. But 120 on a hot IDI or most any other diesel is certainly not normal.

FLDuckHunter,
I just noticed I need to welcome you to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Come back often, you will learn everything you want to know, and probably things you don't want to know.

But we do try to have fun through it all.
