Help! Carb Question
I have a 65 f100 2wd with a 240ci, manual trans, manual choke. My 1 bbl carb leaks like a pig and hesitates. I wanted to rebuild it, asked for advice here and NumbersDummy stated Sanderson Ford of Glendale had 2 nos rebuild kits. The obsolete "parts" guys there were no help - they cross talked one another and even though they listed 2 carb kits in their cat. could not find them. Out of frustration I ordered a carb from Rockauto and it has arrived. Hooray (I thought) but before I puncture the shrink wrap the guy at Rock Auto said because the 1bbl carb is listed for the f250 with a 240 in their catalog, if it is the wrong carb for my f100, they won't take it back. Problem - I noticed on my truck the carb has a rod on the top of the carb going from left to right (as you face the engine) that is some sort of plunger that is connected to the accelerator pump. There is also a rod or linkage on the bottom of the accelerator pump. Now, the Rockauto carb looks the same, but there is no rod on the top and the hole where that plunger would sit on the left top of the carb is plugged. What is the plunger for? Will the rockauto carb work? If not, does anyone need a deal on a new carb??? Arrrrgh! Thanks again in advance.
It should be fine. And can always be fine tuned to air/fuel.
Garbz
The one I ordered from RockAuto that is on my shelf does have the vent valve. I just went to the garage to check it. How ironic is that?
If you plan on returning your original carb for the core charge refund, you might consider grabbing the valve parts first, to include the linkage on the accelerator pump lever. This involves "unstaking" the plunger end where it enters the upper body, but that shouldn't be too bad. I have a small bore model of this carb (for a 144, 170 or 200 CID) that I have disassembled and I was able to work the plunger out without filing or scraping the stake marks at all. I have seen something similar to the delete cover in the specialty hardware drawers at Lowe's and Home Depot, but for the core, I doubt if they'd refuse you for that being gone.
BTW: The Echlin rebuild kit available at NAPA does not come with replacement parts for the vent plunger.
C5TZ9510P .. 1V Auto-Lite/Motorcraft Carburetor (Motorcraft CA357).
Fits: 1965/68 F100/350 240 I-6 M/T / 1969 Econoline 240 I-6.
This carb uses a small round acc pump, with a hole in the center.
---------------------------------------------------------------
In 1970, Ford replaced C5TZ9510P with DOPZ9510M (Motorcraft CA357A).
This carb was used as the "service part replacement" for the C5TZ9510P carb, and it also used on some 1970/72 F100/350 & Econoline 240's.
This later carb has a completly different style of acc pump (it's square with four mounting holes) and does not have a vent valve.
