Painting springs is not recommended.

On Sid's website his drop axles look like they are wider then the stock. When he extends them does it increase the track width also or are thoes pictures misleading?

Because the paint can make them stick and bind when the leafs slide over one another. A thin coat of a hard paint like laquer that will scrape and chip off in short order or just the edges painted won't hurt much, but a paint that remains sticky like rattle can enamel or POR will gum them up, especially if the spring is disassembled and painted between the leafs. New springs have a black oxide coating from heat treating that will keep them looking good for years, especially if given a coat of wax.

And remeber that springs work by converting force into heat. So if you paint between them, the paint will soften and possible melt - stay gummy and melt- re stick itself again and again long after initial installation.

I can't say much about 53 and later, but Sid told me that on the 51's there 3/8 narrower per side. These axles are not extended there re-formed, no material added.

My thought is that a little narrower would help under the fenders. Don't know for sure still waiting to get mine.

Just got home and measured axle against axle... 3/4 inch shorter or 3/8 a side from the stock axle...

JBravo, Can you please post pics of the axle. I would really like to see close ups of Sid's work. I have heard nothing but good things about his drop axles but I havn't seen any up-close.
