Just straight piped my 300

Be more careful, Ian. Please. Next time wear a face mask. Or I will personally punch you right in the throat. 'Cause that's what friends do - right?
Turndowns sound best, but it's annoying in the cab. I say no. Some like it tho and can put up with the noise. There's a reason I run full length tail pipes. I like the sound of an open Flowmaster better - even sounds more like a V8 that way - but the noise in the cab is just too much.

I can put up with teh cab noise untils I run a full length. I like to be reminded that I drive a TRUCK! not some hybrid eco-box. probly couldn't afford one anyways.
Are the disposable cotton masks good enough to keep the fumes out? or do I need something more heavy duty. I know, i need to be more safe. it's the same thing when I'm cutting metal or wood with a chop saw or the sawsall, I barely wear safety glasses and always end up with ****** in my eyes.

So what do you mean by turndown, the actual turndown itself as in turndown for a tailpipe, pointing down instead of straight. Or do you mean turndown as if to say you don't run the exhaust all the way out the back, but instead you dump it after the muffler or after the rear axle using a turndown pipe for saftey reasons.
I ask because you can use a turndown even if you run the pipe all the way out the rear, or behind the tires, and I am inquiring if that somehow changes the sound even if it's all the way out. Like the exhaust pointing down somehow bounces off the ground and makes it louder or has some other effect on the sound.

Won't make any difference. Strage enough tho almost anything you do to the tailpipe locations will change the sound. That's why I "formulated" a rule of thumb for stock 300's when it comes t exhaust. Like I said, a single 2.25'' free flowing pipe with no cats (or just one) and a short 'pack sounds good.

man what a great thread!!! i ran straight pipes on an i6 in my 78 f250. beautiful!!! i didnt have a sterio and didnt need one. it was music to my ears.
later i found an old discarded 14in glasspack that slipped right over my existing pipe. i put exhaust wrap around it, heated it up and and shazam!!! exhaust!!! like 4 bucks and it sounded great. yeah im cheap. ild fight over a penny till we made copper wire. then ild have a new wiring harness. lol

I drove that badboy today on the road and despite the rainy crappy weather, I had my window down a lot of the time because I liked hearing my straight pipe! It sounds like an old diesel tractor, other guys agree too. I'm working on getting a pack because as it is it sounds allright up until about 2000 RPM's and then it gets a little too obnoxious.

I6 with V8 sound...

I'm needing to delete my 30"X10" cylindrical 390 muffler, and not sure what to go with. I might go with the flowmaster 40 2 into 1, or just try something different. I just don't want to end up with a 'bumble bee sound'.

No guarantee my friend. I've heard two or three 300's that sounded like V8's. One had headers, or so he claimed. The other had efi manifolds, custom Y pipe, single 3'' piping into an unknown flowmaster.
I can't figure it out. Some sound good, some don't. That's why I've developed a rule of thumb for a decent sound. It's not the best but it's fool proof. Are you going to run converters? I believe you do?
