SWAP A 4.6L FOR A 5.4L

The computers are the same the only thing besides the converter that needs to be done is that the exhaust has to be modified we looked at doing this after my new truck had its motor go out but we decided not to because the dealership would help buy the 4.6 and not the 5.4

You just have your computer tuned to run the 5.4
The computer operates the transmission and depending on what year you have , you would also run into problems with the PATS if you swap computers.

I'm having this swap done as we speak. Be sure to get a motor that has PI heads (power improved) and you are sure to get more horse and torque. I think the PI engines for 5.4 started in 1999 if I'm correct. If you have the extra cash, invest in a Gryphon tuner (Edge Evolution but better) from PowerHungryPerformance and they can tune your computer to become a 5.4 and even write custom tunes for it based on anything aftermarket that you have installed.

I am doing the same thing. However, I got a '97 4x4 and got an engine from an '02 for a steal of a price. So, on the 4x4's are the converters different? I am going to buy an SCT Tuner for it so I will be able to handle the computer issue. One other thing, I am overseas while putting all this together. Is the '02 a "coil on plug" or standard coils with wires? Can a conversion be made if I got to go one way or the other without rewiring the whole truck? Just some thoughts I got.

I already have the 5.4L from an '02. I got a great price on it so I am totally happy with that. However, and this is from a very knowledgeable source that pertains to Mustangs, is that swapping to a 3 valve or 4 valve head/engine requires a lot of rewiring. I am not willing to re-wire the whole engine bay. Now, that may not be true on the trucks, but from what I have heard that it would have to happen on the GT's so I would have to believe it would happen with the trucks too.

There is a lot more involved swapping in a 3V or 4V then there is to swapping in the 2V.

I thought it only got tricky when you were swapping just the heads? its hard to get a straight answer about these types of engine swaps, commonly done but I think the only way to know how to do it perfectly is experience because of how many variables there are between vehicles and engines..
