no rpms on gauges on a 93 7.3 idi

when the truck first starts up everything is fine but whenever i drive some where and shut it off for a while then start it back up the engine runs fine but the rpm gauge reads 0 and the o/d flashes until i give it fuel and pull away then the gauge reads normal and flashing stops until i let off the pedal they drop back to 0 and the o/d light flashes again. the engine runs fine no studdering or anything like that after about 10 min or so of this its a 50/50 that the rpms will be normal on the gauge can anyone help?

your engine rpm sensor is bad.the tranny needs the sensor as well that explains your od light flashing.

It's right beside the Oil fill cap.

Ford or International for the tach sensor.

NAPA I don't think can get them.

Ford number

E5TZ-17B384-A TACH SENSOR
Last price I heard was around 60 dollars.

And Coalroller, welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Mine operates occasionally. But drops when the lights are turned on. I figure its caused by a bad ground.
