My truck DOES NOT have an axle code on the door tag, I have 3.73 open diffs.
Just to the right of where the AXLE should be mine says E with TR just above that. If that is what you have then you most likely have 3.73 open diffs as well...

I think that what Ford did with these truck is only listed the axle code if you got something special. If you have nothing there then it is 3.73 open by default.

If your axle code really did start with E that would imply a D70 with LS. I thought a D70 was a front axle. At any rate your axle code doesn't include an E, the axle codes for the Excursion would all be for the Sterling 10.5 so possible values would be

31 — 3.73 non-limited slip, F-250/Excursion
C1 — 3.73 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
C2 — 4.10 limited slip, F-250/Excursion
C3 — 4.30 limited slip, F-250/Excursion

Not true. Many of the 2000 models and apperently some of the 2001s had no code listed. Mine is blank and I DO have 4.30:1 gears.

Thanks Scott, that is good to know. I assumed incorrectly, you know what they say about that.

The axle code list that I posted is correct however.

According to Scott an unlisted code DOES NOT imply that you have 3.73, he has no code and he has 4.30

Call a Ford dealer with your VIN, if they are nice they will tell you what you have. My local dealer told me over the phone. If you call and they won't tell you just call somewhere else.

Nof1. If you have a 4x4, look on the front diff. It's easier to read.

Nice... I wish I had that. Although I am am looking at going to 5.13 gears and 38" tires which will give me a final ratio of 4.30 anyway. My point is even if I had the 4.30 gears now I'd still want to regear.
