I change oil in my F-350s every 3,000 - 4,000 miles!
Have a 1997, 2001, 2008, F-350s
2 Have 7.3 one with 6.4!
Why is the smell of the oil in the 6.4 different than the 7.3s at change?
I use Shell Rotela in all of them!
My guess would be in the different amount of blow by that each engine has plus the newer 2008 with it's added emission and software probably makes a difference. It's all in whats in the oil when you change it (how clean it is)
Oils have changed over the period you mentioned also. The EPA has forced the the oil companies to remove some additives (like zinc) so the oil you use today is not the same as the oil you used 5 years ago.

Hey Redford;
He uses the same oil in each but they all smell different at changing time.
I use the same oil out of a 55 gallon drum!
I burn the same fuel! 20* biodesel
I change filter every time!
I have heard that in regenerate some fuel gets in oil!
Could this be the differance in smell?
I hope that oil your using in the 6.4 is CJ-4 rated oil. Also I would not be burning more than 5% bio in the 6.4. The emission stuff cannot handle the extra on that.
In addition if your running bio you need to step up your fuel filter changes too.
Can you describe what it smells like? Have you thought about sending in a sample from each truck to a lab and have an oil analysis done? That will show you what kind of differences there are in terms of additives depleted or contaminants like fuel.
If you get the analysis, please share the results with us. Blackstone Labs
I went to my local Napa store and left a sample
I will let every one know when I get it bacK
As for as Biodiesel, I have been burning it for 5 years
20* winter. 50* spring, fall 99* summer
I use it in all trucks
(F-350s 1997, 2001 7.3s)(f-350 2008 6.4)(1981 8.3 Detroit)
I buy from a company that makes from chicken fat, soybeans
I have found if to change filters every 10,000 miles no problems
I have found Biodiesel puts the 6.4 in filter clean every 175-200 miles
Diesel puts it in 125-150 miles
