Air Filter/breather thumping when cold

Anybody else notice this tumpthump thump tatatata on take off from the passenger front like it is right below the windshield? only thing i can tink off is the air breather snorkel banging, seems like ever since the air filter message came on during snow storm.

is it just me or do you guys get the feeling the service people dont believe we hear these kinds of things...

service people do not beleive anything but a check eng light or a code nowadays. The time of trouble shooting is left to us it would seem.

I never heard of your thumping sound before from anyone. Did you pull the filter, check everything for proper placement and tightness? That would be the only thing I can recommend at this point.

I get the same thing under heavy loads. I have tried to get responses on other threads here by describing it as a sound you could make by popping your hand on the vacuum hose while it's running.

It has not happened to me in a few weeks and I have no idea what it is. Wish I did. Did not go away with a new air filter, the restriction gauge never moves as a result of this popping either.

And I also agree, people look at us as if we just landed from Pluto when we try to describe some of the quirks we encounter.

I wonder now that we are talking about it (well typing), every once in a while from take off, usually could I get what I would call a turbo fart, is that what you are hearing?

It could be but I don't have enough experience with diesels to know what that sounds like. The Dmax I used to drive never made any sounds. My diesel history is '02 Dmax, '08 6.4PSD.

turbo fart to me sounds like it is kinda going in reverse because of too much pressure.

I just picked up a 2008 6.4L Lariat 10 days ago and I noticed the same thump, thump, etc, its under warranty so I took it in. They pulled up a TSB that indicated it was due to a heater/vent door sticking and causing it to release with excessive force. So as it cycles, moving air, or recirculated air, it would thump, thump etc. It took them an afternoon but they fixed it. Might look into that!

tsb 09-4-1 is for the a/c compressor engagement thump. repaired one today by replacing the sucction accumilator (dryer). this is mostly heard at idle as the a/c compressor cycles.

Thanks for the info forddieseldoc, but, the thumping pop-pop-pop sound happens under hard acceleration with a heavy trailer or just without a trailer and special weather circumstances. Generally really hot days, sunny and humid for me. The engine's power really hits a "wall" sometimes. Prob some kind of safety.
