Talking Dont forget the Fuel Accummilator Filter!

~I have gots to post this~

'87 Ranger 2.9L has 2 Fuel filters.

In a way, there are two filters. Inside the fuel accumilator is a wix#33268 filter. Clogged to the gills! Previous owner changed it before also. Teeth marks on it.
Blew my mind, I did not know that and never heard of it. As in, any other posts, its not even mentioned, nor in Haynes book. But one of the first filters at Advance On-Line and Napa. Guess more truck owers should be aware of this lil' nugget.
Well, the parts store closed for today.

Check into it... Hopefully this will help others!!!

~All have a ~Merry Christmas~ All others ~To each his own~
Many Blessings...

The Fuel Accummilator is located, on my stock '87 Ranger 2.9L XLT Auto, at the frame rail between the tank and the high pressure pump, protected by a bracket plate (swivel out of way). The bottom is unscrewed with large Channel Locks, or a 'rubber wrench', before loosing mounting bolts. I took the whole thing off to clean properly. Mine is plastic, so please be careful on your grip.

I GOTS to say again, on THIS day, its of great concern why there is no mention of this FILTER.

My 'primary' filter is on the frame rail just after the high pressure pump.
Thats just weird... I never heard of a filter there and you thought thats the primary.

I remember my 87 Bronco II had the same thing. I seam to remember one of the filters cost a lot more than the other. Never actually changed it though, I melted a piston before i got the chance too.

Is there is any chance you could take a picture of this? I'm kind of confused.

The normal 'in-line' filter is on the frame beside the engine. Accumulator in back before HiPressure pump.

Found a new problem. The check valve for the inlet of the accummilator/reservoir is bad. Stays closed causing very little fuel to enter.
Anyone think it could be removed without signifigant stress to pump in the tank?

I tried adding pics but they wont allow me to post attachments here (posting rules at bottom of this page). My bad, though, I dont know why.

I am mobile! Repaired check valve in fuel accumilator/reservoir and fixed other line restrictions I didnt know about. As expected, runs like a Rat outta hell. Thanks for all the insight and recommendations.

Very late update

I just wanted to point out that the fuel accumulator may not contain a fuel filter. I've got an '88 V6 that was having lots of performance problems. I opened up the accumulator expecting to find a filter. To my suprise there was no filter and sealing the accumulator up became sort of a headache.

Definately be warned that on later years you may be opening a can of worms of you touch this.

As it turned out my inline filter was clogged but the real source of problems for my truck was a clogged cat.

cut the exhaust tube behind the cat and get a long hard object that fits inside the cat. its only ceramic so you should be able to chunk it up enough to come out. mine has 2 oddball diamater pipes going into the cat so removing it completly took a lil work and time.
