Replacing Rear Wiper motor and Rear Shocks

I'm sick of the rear wiper working when it wants to and then only going 1/2 way across the window. Tomorrow I am going to replace the motor and put on a new wiper arm at the same time. I popped the rear panel off a month or so ago and of course it had all the plastic over the metal. Do you have to rip the plastic off to replace the motor? Is the replacement challenging? I did not inspect the motor area when I had the panel off.

SEcondly, I am going to put on rear Monroe SensaTrac load leveling (coil over shocks) to help offset a slight droop I get when towing my popup and putting 4 bikes on the rear receiver. What is the best way to remove and replace. Do you remove the bottom bolt first or top bolt. Do you need to jack the truck up and remove tire or do it while on the ground. Do you install in opposite order or reattach in same order you removed. thanks

You did not mention year so I can only relate how it is on the first generation. As far as the wiper arm you will need to remove the plastic. Replacing the wiper motor is no big deal. The longest lasting one I have found was purchased at the dealer (I have changed it about 3 times). You will need to jack up the truck and remove the back wheels supporting under the frame as well as the rear axle. To install a coil-over you will need as much drop of the rear axle as you can get. The biggest problem bolt is the top on the drivers side. You will need lots of extensions. Otherwise I think unbolting the bottoms and then the tops for removal and reverse the order for install. Have you considered air bags in the rear coils with an on-board compressor with some Bilstein shocks?

An air ratchet would help a lot in removal of the shock top bolt on driver side.

Changing the rear wiper motor is not much of a challenge but, I wanted to replace the stamped tin mounting bracket on my wife's 98 Explorer Because it had cracked at one of the bends and the blade wouldn't clean the whole wiping area. I went to my friendly Ford dealership and was told that in order to replace the bracket I had to buy the wiper motor/bracket assembly for $130.00 as Ford does not offer the bracket alone. I went into shock and started searching the local bone yards and bought the motor, bracket, wiper and wiper arm for about $23.00. The bracket alone should not cost more than$5/10.00.
I think practices like this is demonstrating how the manufactuters are shooting themselves in the foot while trying to make huge profits.

Picked up a reman wiper motor from Advance thie a.m. for $39 with lifetime replacement as well as a new wiper arm. Installed quickly and easily except for those dang snap in screws that help hold on the door cover. I broke both heads off so need to get some from a boneyard or dealer. Works like a dream.

Wrong shocks came in so will do this another day. Local shop wants about $55 to install the rears. I think I should save this money and do it myself.

That one really sucked. Here's my opinion regarding it:

i put those same shocks on my old suburban ( 1986 with leaf springs), and it took out the droop but made the ride pretty harsh. I'd think twice before putting these in a daily driver

Remove the bracket and have it brazed or welded.

I just saw this link in another thread of a guy parting out a 2001 Expedition. The ad says he has the rear hatch minus the glass. Maybe he's willing to ship the bracket to you.

alloro,

I called thet guy parting out the 2001 (south carolina) Saturday. He has the part atached to the rear door but did not seem all that interested in removing and sending it. I am still waiting for his response.

I may do like Moto says and just have it mig welded.

Thanks again for all who contribute on this site. All of us are smarter than one of us.

Had the bracket welded

Well, contacted a couple of ebayers who were parting out expys, it must not be worth their time to take the bracket of for a few bucks.

Had my mechanic weld it back together, took 2 minutes, and he charged me $000000. free is a great price. It all back together.

The price is more than right. Now that it's back together the question is; does it work like it's supposed to?

it works fine

Yes it works like should. no problems, an easy fix. I had to hammer the bracket a few times to get the exact fit. but a few hits on the bracket and the wiper moter was centered in the hole of the rear door.

PS: every boneyard I called for expedition parts said good luck. Seems they do not get a lot of junk expys. I guess thats good.
