Is the truck mass air? If not your cam choices are severly limited and anything that creates a lopey idle won't work with the stock SD EFI system.

The mass air conversion isn't hard you'll need a few things, the meter itself the proper wiring, preferably a complete harness for a MAF engine. The inlet tubing, a computer, most of which you can get off an 88 up mustang, 89 to 93 cougar thunderbird, 95 to 00 (I think) explorer. The truck intakes and throttle bodies are different than all of the ones I listed so you might need to get a meter for a newer truck unless you're doing a GT40 intake too.

The van most likely has an E4OD tranny so a MAF conversion is expensive because it is also computer controlled and that also means the mustangs computers are not compatable. Opening up the exhaust really helps these trucks and adding 1.7 rockers is a good way to get some more air through the motor without digging into it too far. There aren't a lot of SD EFI friendly cams but the one I currently have in my 5.0 is and it really improves the engines breathing.

Oh yes, the basic restrictions are it must have under 215deg intake duration at 0.050" lift and at least 114deg lobe seperation angle to work at all, but durations below 210deg are better because vacuum is what the SD system relies on and it doesn't take much to mess it up. The XE264HR in my sig meets the general requirements(212 degrees) but the idle vacuum is 2-3" of mercury below what a stock cam does or the Crane 444232(206 degrees) that I have in my 5.8, so I'd say it's right on the limit of what's really acceptable. Both these cams really wake these motors up, combined with headers there's lots more pull all the way to 5000rpm and beyond, the exhaust sound is louder and more agressive, and the motor doesn't sound restricted like a stock one does. Crane is currently being restructured so cams are not available and that's too bad because they had several SD friendly truck cams for these motors. Specs for the two cams are linked below for comparison purposes.

You can use the Comp cams Conanski is suggesting but not the crane because they are currently out of busniess (which is a shame). That cam and a full exhaust and you will be suprised at the difference of power output. I'm still shocked at the torque mine hase after my build. Pulls off the line faster than most of the trucks around here and pulls wayy harder than stock
