My feeling is I am going to buy a name brand because hopefully they will give you decent oil as they have a reputation to uphold. After that I would say the weight oil you run is very important. I would reserve synthetic for high stress or extreme cold situations, but have no problem with using a synthetic-dino blend.

This was posted this week by someone who works at the Shell plant in Houston. What's on the outside of the bottle doesn't tell you what's on the inside:

Well if it's Super Tech that we're talking about then yeah it's made by Shell. Let's just say I have seen it running on the line!

* * *

The Super Tech is made in very large quantities and shipped to at least a 10 state region around Texas. . . . In talking to some of the guys in the lab, they said that the recipe is very similar to some of the other oils made at the plant.

The brand doesnt matter the best thing to do is pick one brand and stay with it in that vehicle.Switching brands after a long time wont really hurt anything but the chem make up of the different brand could start adding sludge from mixing with what deposit are left behind.or could cleean out what was their first wich could have been plugging a leak
but i dont have anything to back that up just what ive noticed

(have you ever put penzoil in a car thats always had valvo oil in it and all the sudden it starts smoking)

Lubrizol is one of the biggest makers of oil additive packages. Most (but not all) oil companies are blenders only. They do not make their own additive packages, they use the additive packages made by other companies, such as Lubrizol.

Here are a couple of sound bites from Lubrizol's website:

We invented detergent additives for diesel oil that cleaned up the severe deposits that plagued early diesel engines. We invented antioxidants that ended runaway bearing corrosion. We invented extreme pressure agents to protect against wear under heavy loads. We invented pour point depressants and viscosity modifiers to expand the temperature range diesel engines could operate in. In short, we made diesel engines work.

We continue to supply the world's most technologically advanced additive performance packages for diesel engine oil. Working in strategic alliances with large oil companies, we become an extension of their marketing and technical staffs, backward integrating from their premier oil brands to our ability to create and test innovative custom formulations.

With other customers, we race to get specification approvals for oils so they can get new products to the market early. We provide performance packages that cover the widest range of base stocks. We offer the greatest flexibility in treat levels so customers can provide precisely the product they want at the price they need. We train our customers' sales and technical people in diesel engine and lubrication technology. Through our worldwide network of sales offices and manufacturing plants, we ensure customers technical support, timely supply and consistent product quality. And we even work with our smallest customers directly rather than through distributors.

* * *

Core Packages

We offer proven core packages of additive chemistries to solve a range of marketing and lubrication problems for our customers. With our unparalleled flexibility in treat levels, these core packages can offer customers cascading performance so they can economically adjust their formulations for different products. These packages represent superior technology backed by comprehensive and compelling performance data to support marketing claims. Core packages can be used alone or enhanced with performance booster packages to achieve higher performance and specification levels

Performance Booster Packages

Performance boosters give customers the advantages of enhancing their core package to achieve higher performance characteristics, leading to reduction in inventory and complexity. This core plus booster system gives all customers, big and small, a great deal of formulating flexibility.
So, it sounds like to me that even the cheapest oils get at least a core package. Which is pretty good. Some "premium" oils may get Booster package. My guess is that all diesel oils get a Booster in addition to the core package.

The bottom line - Any API-rated oil is pretty darn good.

But I wonder if there are any bootleggers selling cheap oil, falsely labeled with the API donut and SL? Not sure what the possibility is of that, but I would think they are more likely to do it with off brands than say Valvoline or Pennzoil. And if this is done I suspect you are more likely to find these mislabeled oils in dollar-type stores and other non-typical places to buy oil.

Yes, they counterfeit everything now.

Actually, I believe just the opposite. Bootleggers are more likely to mislabel brand names.

Easier to get $1/qt for "Pennsoil" than $1/qt. for "SuperTrek".
