hey brian,

were you running on the back or front fuel tank? if you were using the back tank, the lifter pump is known to have faulty wiring, try switching over to the front tank, then do a bleed-and-crank. hope this helps

It's turning over okay, and do the glow plugs seem to be cycling? You have fuel at the injectors nwo that you cracked them, or no?

There shouldn,t be any wires to the fuel pump unless someone installed an electric pump.
Is that all you have driven it is home from purchasing it.
Stalling in the driveway sounds like out of fuel or lost power to the fss are you getting voltage to the ip and can you hear it click when you power it up.
the fss wire or fuel is about all that will stall these. how did it run on the way home.

1991 7.3 stalled

i purchased vehicle and drove it home 30 minutes and it ran and idled great. pulled up street and came to a stop at my house and the truck died. i am running off front tank with 1/4 diesel in it. truck had been running at least 45 minutes. would crank fine just not start. bled lines and changed filter. still only cranked. what is the fss, is that the selinoid on the injection pump or the glow plug relay? truck was at operating temp so wouldnt that rule out glow plug relay? so do i need to check current at wires on injection pump? or glow plug relay?thx so much for the quick responses. brian
p.s. truck was coughin a little as i pulled in neighborhood. but no leaks on returns or injectors but still running original return lines.

The rubber foot on the fuel pickups in the tanks can crack and fall off letting you suck air instead of fuel. The gauge will show around a quarter tank of fuel left. Did you fill the new filter with fuel before installing? Try adding some fuel to the tank and give it a try. If it starts the foot has fallen off, the fix is to add a short piece of fuel rubber fuel line to the metal line in the tank Secure the hose with a clamp, and cut the loose end in a V so it can't suck to the bottom and starve the engine of fuel.

im betting you have less than 1/4 tank and your pick-ups are broke off like farmert suggested

I second the pickup tube in the tank put some fuel in it and fill your filter.
There are three wires going to the pump one goes to the fast idle solonoid on the linkage. one is your cold start advance both of these are connected to the temp switch down by the water neck where the radiator hose hooks up, these do not have to work it will start and run fine without them.
The other one is your fss (fuel shutoff solonoid) it has to have voltage with the key on.
With the key on you can unplug it and hear a click if it is working.
With it cutting out before you got home sounds like it is out of fuel, fill your filter and while somebody cranks the motor you can bleed air out at the schrader valveon the filter header after it is running clear fuel you may have to crack some injector lines to finish bleeding the system.
Caution do not crank on the starter for over 20 seconds at a time without giving a couple minutes cool down time.

When i removed the fuel filter i placed a cup under filter and cranked. fuel poured out so i was ruling out the fuel delivery but i will add 5 gallons and check. is there an electrical issue that could shut off this truck?i remember my 6.9 in highschool ten years ago vaigley and i had to replace some kind of relay.off to the fuel station to by some diesel and hope this works thx brian.

Coughing as you entered the neighborhood tells me it was sucking air.

Dump a couple gallons in the tank, refill the filter, loosen a couple injection lines and crank it over till you get fuel at the injectors.

Now tighten the injection lines and it should start.

Caution, max cranking time is 20 seconds, followed by at least 2 minutes for the starter to cool down.
If the starter gets to hot, magic white smoke appears, and money disappears from your wallet.

Glad to hear she going, but it is hard to belive you don't want to lay in a foot of snow so you can burn that last three gallons. lol
When you fill it up see how much it holds it could be your guage is off.
