Water and Oil Gauges Not working

I am trying to bring a 1990 F150 back to life. Somewhere in its past someone converted it from a E4OD to a 5 spd. manual. At the same time they converted the gauge panel to a Tach gauge package. I finally got the truck running and now I have no water or oil gauge movement. The engine is grounded to the chassis and I pulled the connection at the sending unit for the water and grounded it to both the engine and the chassis with no change. I have another gauge package but from what I have read here they are pretty hardy. Any other ideals? BTW the voltage and fuel indicators work fine. The truck had cheap after market gauges when I got it so I suspect that the factory ones did not work at that time.
