I knew the starter was spinning more slowly than it did last winter so had planned to replace them this winter. I was at a sale a few days ago with a temp in the 20's. The truck sat for 5-6 hours and when I went to start it, even after letting the glow plugs work a little longer than usual, it had to crank quite a bit longer before it fired. I kept in the back of my mind the info about the minimum voltage to fire the injectors (thanks to FTE) and was getting worried. I've got a digital voltmeter on my compass/temp thingy but it wasn't plugged in at the time. Would have been interesting to see what the voltage was.
Mine have been showing signs also this fall, slower cranks but when it cranked and the starter sounded like it was struggling and got a no start, I replaced fast. in the 30's the last startup try. I had my old Motorcrafts tested at Wally world and one was at 200 CA and the other was at 500 or so CA, it was time..
All of this talk about batteries I knew it was a matter of time for me. Yep last week I had to hook the charger up to Red after I let it set for 3-4 days to get started. When I got back home I let the batteries trickle charge good.I was hoping I left a light on or the door ajar. But I guess not it was still 32 today and Red would crank slowly but not enough to get the needed oil pressure to fire up so I put the charger back on for a few minutes and it fired right up. So looks like some new batteries coming tomorrow. Probably the Autocraft Gold from Advance for the same price as the WW everstart maxx.
Yep they were BAD. 1 checked 614 CCA and the other 1 checked 745 CCA it was in the almost bad zone, there machine said charge and return to vehicle but we don't do that unless you absolutely have to. As said Advance will price match Wally-World so I got 2 new Autocraft Gold for $159.00 installed I helped with the install I don't trust many of them counter guys working on my truck. Dang you don't know how weak your batteries are until you get new ones.

Shoot Eddie, I'm wondering if my readings were CCA or CA in general, pretty sure he said CA, o well, they were shot. Glad you wheeled and dealed, happy starting.
Thanks Mike. Yea they checked them independently and there machine gave a print out and it said voltage was about 12.58 volts but the CCA was 614 REPLACE BATTERY on the passenger side. The drivers side was voltage 12.54 CCA 745 GOOD RECHARGE and it has some other stuff like temp and rated CCA on the print out.
The only reason I went with these batteries was thats what I have had them in it since I have had RED almost 6 years. Actually the everstart maxx at Wally's does have a year longer pro-rating. Mike it looks like we will be cranking for a while.
