48 floor / grill / rollpan questions

hey... new member here. picked up a 1948 F-1 a few weeks back. has a decent flathead from a '52 merc (4" stroke). the originally a texas truck, but it's spent the past 8 years outside here in IL - the body's in decent shape but rust is starting to take it's toll. pics here

onto some questions...

I've seen two types of replacement floor pans: 2 piece (individual R & L sides) and 1 piece models. What are your experiences with them? Got a preference?

Also, one of my grill bars is jacked up. I see the stainless covers all over the place, but no replacement bars. Anyone know where you can get these things? (or anyone have an extra lying around?)

Lastly... I've seen guys with rollpans on their '48s, but I've never seen them listed for sale. Haven't decided if I wanna do a bumper or rollpan, but just wanna see what my options are.

Welcome to the board!

First things first, get online and order every free catalog you can get your hands on. They are a valuable source of info as most of them have great parts daigrams that have been taken out of the original manuals. Grill bars are available, I can't remember from which vendor but I know I've seen them in catalogs.
As far as a rear roll pan you might have to fab your own. Most of the premade roll pans out there are for the 51 and newer trucks (actually late 1950). the 48-mid 1950 trucks have a different bed. The bedsides have a raised panel, the stake pockets are curved and the rear sill below the tailgate is rounded at the bottom. The mid 50 and up trucks have flat bedsides, square stake pockets and the rear sill is square.

Wow Bobby, that’s getting to be quite a list!

Hey ghart, welcome to the site, you do know that 48’s are called “monkey faces” don’t you? The best solution to you problem would be to change the front sheet metal to 51-52 and be a “buck tooth” with rolled pan. Heh heh!

Welcome to FTE! I hope you find this place useful and entertaining.

I have that same problem too. Roll pan, bumper... hmmm.. When I look at the truck I think a roll pan would look awsome; but then I get in front of a texter in traffic and thoughts of metal spikes crawl through my head.

A bunch of guys here build their own "roll" pans and I'll let them go into that in more detial. Now what I would like to do for my truck is to somewhat mold the bottoms of the fenders together with a flat sheet of metal (removable of course). Poking the exhaust through and adding a plate here would be optional and cool. This would be an easy project leaving the rolling part out of the fabrication. Just a thought.

BTW Nice looking truck! Have fun with it!

I installed a new floor in my 52. I used a one piece.I ended up cutting it in half then installed it and welded the cut.turned out good. Tryed doing it all at once but for my first floor the one piece was hard to get it all lined up.Less change of cab shifting out of alignment when doing one side at a time.

If you are replacing the whole floor in one piece or two, the right way is to put the chassis on jack stands and shim until the frame is level front to rear and side to side. Verify the chassis is square by measuring the diagonals. Next fit the doors (make sure the hinges are in good shape not saggy) jacking the cab as necessary to get equal gap all around. Now check the cab for square by measuring the diagonals on it and check level. Once you are satified that everything is as aligned and square as you can get it, remove doors and use some 1" square 1/8" wall tubing (it's pretty inexpensive from a steel supplier and very handy to have around, you'll find 100s of uses for it afterwards. Buy ~ 100') tack welded in place to brace the cab: across the door openings near the bottom and beltline, side to side connecting the previous tubes, diagonal across door opening, diagonal across cab from front lower corner intersection on one side to rear upper intersection on the othe side. Now the cab will not shift alignment so you can feel free to cut away the floor and replace it on the chassis or remove the cab and work on it that way. If doing it on the chassis you may find it easier to use the two piece floor.

If you need to replace the floorpan, check carefully the condition of the forward cab mounts for corrosion. The corner of the floor pan is underneath part of the cabmounts in a sandwich fashion. I replaced both sides when I did the floorpan. I would not try it with the cab on the frame. In my case I tack welded in cross braces in both the door openings and across the cowl below the dash-no movement and no door fit issues.
