Overhead temp display not correct

Our 01 excursion temp display is reading higher then it should. My wife said the other morning went from like 16 then up to 80 and back into the 30's. Any help appreciated.

Sounds like it may have got a strong wind of engine air. I want to say the temp sender is behind the grille on the drivers side of the rad support. Moving it away from the rad might help, cleaning the plug wouldn't hurt anything either.
