Heavy Duty???

I need to tow a trailer that weights 8000 lbs. So can anybody tell me what is the difference between a F-250 and a F-250 Heavy Duty? With a 460 in it do I need a Heavy Duty or will it just ride stiffer?

"Warn" states "heavy duty" has the 30 spline front axles and the non HD have 19.---Just a thought!God Bless--John

HD will have either a D44 or D50 front axle (no real rhyme or reason it seems) and a full floater sterling 10.25 rear. GVWR will also be 8500lbs +.

I read the first half of that thread and there is flat-out wrong information in every response. I would not go by the answers in there.

Here is everything you need to know about LD vs HD F-250's. This information is all correct, you can take it to the bank.

- ALL 4wd F-250's are leaf-sprung.
- ALL 2wd F-250's are coil-spring.
- You can get a HD F-250 from sometime in the 80's to 1997.
- Front axle does not make a truck HD or LD. You can find LD's with Dana 50's and HD's with Dana 44's.
- If it has a diesel of 460, it's a HD. No LD trucks were offered with those motors.
- HD trucks have a GVWR > 8500 lbs.
- HD trucks came with a full-floating rear axle. LD trucks have a semi-floater.
- LD trucks with the 302 had the Mazda 5-speed. All other 5 speed manuals had the ZF.

The only F-250's that ever came with 7-lug axles were the 1998 F-250's (some may be late 1997 MY). They had the new body style F-150 body but said F-250 on the badge. I'm not sure on the GVWR but I think it's less than 8500#. Ford did not make a HD F-250 or F-350 that year at all.

Remove one of your back hubcaps and see if you have something like this sticking out your rim.

Since you have a 460, you should.




This is a heavy duty F250.

That pic reminds me of why I no loner live in the northeast! That rust is just awful. I never see trucks like that in California.

I've visited Cali last summer. Great to visit, not live there. I could never live there.

Texas, now theres a place for me, friendly people, hot sun, rust free trucks, but inspections every year....

Don't'cha miss this ****?

The only mistake I see is the (- You can get a HD F-250 from late 80's to 1997.)


Light Duty F250's came out in the early 80's. Kind of like Chevy's "Heavy Half" line up.

In the 70's, there was no such thing as a light duty 250. All F250's were the same as F350's. all had full floating rear axles, only difference was front axles on 4x4's

I'm actually not sure on when the HD/LD thing started. I know I've seen them as far back as the late 80's but I don't hang out much in the 80-86 forum. I can't ever remember seeing one. I guess I'll have to go back and edit.
