F250 motor swap problems

Hi, here is the story I bought a f250hd it's a 97 old body style with a 351w that didn't run . It came with a 1990 f150 that had a good 5.0 motor (or so I thought) to swap into it . So I did the swap and the problems started . First I ran it on the 5.0 computer it ran perfect in the shop but that computer didn't run my transmission. So now I am running it on the 351w computer. It runs but It is burning a lot of gas and seems to be flooding at idle. So here is a few questions If I get a computer out of a newer f 150 say a 95 or 96 that had a 5.0 would it run my transmission ? Would this help with gas mileage? Also my truck is a 4x4 and has a e4od trans (I think)can a 95 or 96 2wd trucks computer run my transmission ? I am new to this site so sorry if i did anything wrong or if I am asking the same questions as someone else. Any info would be greatly appreciated ,Thanks.

a 95 or 96 would do it after the 94 production year Ford changed the board on the solenoid pack inside the tranny to where the computer does the PROM protection instead of the solenoid pack itself so that is the reason the 90 wouldnt run your tranny (unless the 90 had a manual or an aod tranny then it didnt even have the e4od in it.)

So pretty much any truck's computer 95 or 96 2 or four wheel drive will run my transmission (if it is an auto of course ) . Also if I wanted to swap to a 4.9 that had an e40d could that be done and still use my trans ( I mean will it bolt up ) and use the 4.9 harness?

well you would have to use the 4.9 computer with the engine otherwise you will open up a whole mess of problems. Honestly it would be better to go to the junkyard and find a 95-96 bronco or 150 and buy the computer out of it

ok thanks that is what I will probably do. The 5.0 is on it's last legs now so I might try and get another engine to. Do you think the right computer will help with the gas issue? I have compared my truck to other similar trucks an I seem to be burning 25 to 35% more.

yes it will a 5.8 is a bigger motor hence it uses more gas to push it the computer thinks you are running a 5.8 so it is giving the amount of gas for one. if you were to try to run a 5.8 on a 5.0 computer it would run lean alot.

You want a '94 or '95 f150 computer actually the f150's got obd-2 in '96 and that computer won't even plug into your harness. Another 5.8 motor would fix your fuel consumption problems too.

OK , but why is my 97 heavy duty not like the 96 f150 is it because it's 3/4 ton? they have the same body style but mine has an older trans without obd-2 is that right? I'm just trying to get all the info I can before I go find a parts truck.

is your truck obd 1 with an e4od tranny if so find a truck at a junkyard with the engine you want attached to an e4od and is obd1 and take the computer out (engine too if you so desire)

Yes..... only trucks under 8500lb GVWR got OBD-2 in 1996, everything else stayed the same as it was until the all new SuperDuty truck was introduced in the 1998 model year.

Great ! I think I have enough info now to get the truck working right. Thanks guys you really helped me out. One last question it's about the old 5.8 that i took out. It would run fine for about twenty minutes then would start to sputter and eventually shut off and the exhaust would get really black. It would start right up after it cooled down . Any ideas what was wrong? Truck was taken to several garages before I bought it an they couldn't figure it out.

See.. it's always interesting to get more background info on a problem. I got some good news and bad news for you, the good news is there's probably nothing wrong with your 5.8 motor, the bad news is there is something wrong with the truck computer and it will need to be replaced.
