Cleveland Engine pre 73 or 73-74

How do you tell the difference between the two? My donor is a 73 torino sport but the engine is not original I know it is a cleveland but not sure what year. I need to know to order my crossmember according to mid fifty. My block casting # is D2AE-CA. Anyone know how to tell?

Thanks Havi I will post it as soon as I can. It will probably take a few days since the car is out at the farm to keep the neighbors from getting upset about an old primered car in the driveway. Will the date code be close to the same location on the block?

Havi is right about the date code. You want to find a small tag-looking thing with a series of numbers like 3K22 or 2G9, etc. Find that and we can decode the year, month and day the block was cast.

I would be curious to know what Mid-fifty is saying is different between the pre and post 73 Cleveland blocks. AFAIK, they are all the same, mount wise.

Exactly. And that would make sense. But to say there is a difference in actual Clevelands between 72-73... that makes me curious.

Ford changed the motor mount after 72. I think that is why Mid fifty is asking.

The motor mount, or insulator, but not the block. So if that's the case, dating the block wouldn't matter. What they should be asking is 'which mount (insulator) are you using?', not which year engine, IMHO. It would make things a lot more clear. If, in fact, this is the case.

My understanding was that the pre '73 blocks had three bolts that mount the pad to the block. After '73 Ford changed the Cleveland to a four bolt pattern on the block when they added the 351M/400 to the engine line with the big block bell housings. My 351C has the three bolts on the block where the pad mounts and is pre '73. Also the pad on pre '73 has a bolt that goes through the mount on the frame side and the after 73 the frame side has a stud. My 2 cents.......

This is the only "Cleveland*" block insulator mounting bosses I'm familiar with. If there's a different variety that happened to slip past me after all these years, I'd like to know.

*And when I say "Cleveland", I'm referring to the low deck 351 version, cast between model years 1970-1974.
