Broken shifter mechanism...

Hey guys, I'm new here and to ford trucks. I recently got a 95 f-250 4x4 auto w/ 5.8l
The truck has been sitting for about 2 years and it was used as a salt/plow truck prior to being parked...there is alot of corrosion.
I thought I was in pretty good shape, had it out on the road a few days ago and seem to drive pretty good. However i forgot to try out the 4x4.

So today I tried to shift from 2h to 4h and I snapped of the aluminum shifter mechanism that the floor shifter bolts to. I have no idea what this part is called or how to get it off. Any advice would be appreciated.

I would just go to the junkyard an look for one that is in good shape.
Before you do that thogh, make sure that all the linkages work, would be pointless to install new one if a linkage or the t-case itself is stiff or locked up, could be what caused it to break in the first place.

Yeah, once I remove the broken part I'll make sure nothing else is frozen up.
Do you think that part could be effectively welded? I know somone that can weld aluminum, It broke just below the upper mounting ear.
From the looks of the part, that area is subject to some torque...not sure if welding is worth trying.

It's called pot metal and no it can't be welded. Everybody breaks these shifters mechanisms at least once.. yes I did too.. I wonder why that is?

Thanks, I havent gotten it out yet, thought it was aluminum. Guess I'll be calling the junkyard on Monday. Any advice removal looks pretty straightforward...do the ends of the linkage just pop off of the posts at the transfer case and the broken part, the posts are very corroded and its hard to tell whats going on there.

Yes remove the bolts and the whole works should pop off. Hit it with a steel brush and drown it in lubricant before hand if it's heavily corroded.

So, I got the part out.
I'm trying to find a part # for this thing, does anyone know what it's called. Or a website I might be able to find out on?

Anyone? I found a picture of it on a bronco website. Is it simply called the transfer case shifter? Still can't find a part #

I just ordered a new one a while ago from Ed, the parts guy here on FTE. www.partsguyed.com

Part number for the shifter is F6TZ7210HA - this is the current part number.

Just a quick update. Got the new shifter installed yesterday. Working like it should.

Another question...
Let me start off by saying I dont have a manual or i would read it.

Is there a "procedure" for shifting into 4H or 4L?

Should I lock the hubs before or after shifting? Does it matter?

Do I have to go into reverse to fully disengage 4x4?

I've finally got the truck ready to go, I don't want to screw anything up with stupidity.

Thanks,
Mike
