Millwright, Automotive, or Diesel Tech?

I cant decide on what I want to do for a living/go to school for. I have done maintenance for a manufacturing company for a few years and for the most part liked the variety of things to do. I cant consider myself a millwright, I don't have enough knowledge in hydraulics or electrical. Ive been laid of for a year now and I need to do something considering the wife and 3 month old.

What would be the best out of being a Automotive tech, Diesel tech, or Millwright? What has the best job outlook, better pay, etc...

I can't say what the job market is like in your area, but around here transmission techs draw top pay. It goes without saying that good ones are in demand while sloppy ones are not. For comparison, I'm a CNC machinist ( I program, set up and operate), and I make $21/hr and a local trans shop is paying $30/hr for a trans tech. Makes me want to head back to school to retrain...

Forget Millwright...............We do not like to dirty our hands in America with manufacturing anymore.........You will be looking to start over at a advanced age like me.

Transmission mechanic earns a min of $25, usually $35 per hour at dealerships. A good diesel mechanic earns $25-$35 per hour and the best place you can probably work is Ryder Trucks. Also, it is the toughest place to get a job at.

Looking down the road I would go either diesel or boat mechanic. I would not bother with being a dealership tech.

I'll jump on the Diesel Tech band wagon. If you're good...you'll always be in demand...be able to write your own ticket!!!

I would think that the diesel field would be the best in the long run. I can see where transmissions would be a good field, but who knows how that part is going to change over the next 30+ years.
