Problems with my 460
I got a 1973 460 I got from a lincoln. I put it in my 1964 ford f100 and I have been having some troubles with it. I had idling problems but fixed that because there was a huge vacuum leak in the back of the intake. After that it idled good and seemed to run good. It was open headers so a couple days ago I put on dual exhaust. So i went to start it and now it backfires like crazy through the exhaust and shuts down with a backfire through the carb. The only way I can keep it running is if I have the choke fully closed, if it opens any then it will start to backfire again. I think it maybe the carb because its a crap quadrajet. Any help would be appreciated. I just triple checked the firing order and thats not it.

It is lean for sure. Lean causes backfires. You are right, get rid of the Quadra-junk. It is good for mileage but it takes someone that really knows Q-jets to make them work for preformance.
