What happens to a E4Od at 170k miles?

I assume you mean the housings, but not necessarily the bellhousing? Bellhousing patterns are different for each type of engine, i.e. I6/SBF, BBF, diesels, etc. and IIRC the bellhousings are not removable. I know Paul aka thePunisher offers a version of his E4OD with 4R100 internals.
Now the housings from behind the integral bell housing are all the same weather it be a e40d,4r100,300,302,351,460,4.2,4.6,5.5,6.8, or 7.3.
So in theory you could have a e40d from a 300 built w guts from a 4r100 w a 7.3, now we re talking bullet proof

I got 235,000mi out of my E40d in my 97 stroker. I bought it with 196k and I hopped it up with a custom TS chip and I also have a resistor on my injection pump. After all that I am pretty hard on it. it puts out an honest 300hp on the dyno. but at 235k is was slipping had to pedal it to get it to shift through all the gears. I couldn't afford a suncoast tranny and now I regret going with a factory reman tranny but it came with a 100k war. Im a Ford Tech in Lafayette IN and I have 240k on it now and the new tranny is starting to have issues. they are weak once you get power in front of them. I looked into putting a 4r100 in but the electronics and the programing in the PCM are different.

People hate on it but it really isn't a very bad trans it gets the job done with a shift kit it really holds its own. if i knew i wasnt goin to be workin in it spending alot of time in traffic (and if i had the chance before it blew) i would probably swap in a c6

I just dropped the pan on my new-to-me '96 Bronco to do fluid, filter & gasket. Its E4OD has 190k on it. The fluid was nasty; I can't see how it could be the factory fluid but I can't really say. The magnet had about 1/4 inch of goop on it but no chunks. I couldn't see any large debris in the filter. It still had a cork gasket that was weeping badly.
I've got my fingers crossed but it seems to be doing the job so far.
EDIT: Oh yeah, if anyone cares it got Castrol's HM fluid (green bottle). The E4OD in my '95 loved the stuff, even better than Mobil 1 so that's what I'm sticking with.

Way back when I bought that Bronco in 1993 (with 44K miles on it) a transmission guy told me the E4OD needed a bigger cooler on it so I put in an external cooler. He also told me NOT to get the kind where you can see the tube snaking back and forth inside the fins, he said I had to get the kind that was more like a radiator with multiple paths for the fluid to go. It was more expensive than the snaky kind but I credit this cooler with my transmission's long life. I have towed some heavy loads with that Bronco and it never complained and I never had a heat issue to where the torque converter seal went bad (pretty common when towing with the E4OD).
