please help.how do you remove the fan clutch shaft from the end of the water pump.i'm at my wits end with this.what is the trick to keeping the pulley from spinning while turning the bolt.i've been at this for 3 hours.thanks
When the belt won't hold it I use a strap wrench. I have not replaced one on a 5.4 yet does it have the 4 bolts/nuts or does it thread on the waterpump shaft? Either way if you can't get the fan side to stay still with the fan belt use a strap wrench. The strap wraps around the pulley so it will keep it from turning.
the big problem is trying to keep the pulley from spinning theres not much room for a strap wrench.does anyone know what size wrench for the shaft nut
Places like Advance Auto and Autozone rent the special tool kit to remove it. The tool kit comes with the pulley holder and the wrenches to fit the nut. I think it's a 32mm (1-1/4") wrench that you would need.
thanks ed,i got it but it only goes as far as to tell you how to unbolt the pulley not how to keep the pulley from spinning when trying to remove the fan shaft
my mistake ed they were different.looking at both of the special tools your supposed to use the large wrench fits on the shaft nut but i dont understand where the small crows foot wrench fits in
