What is the difference in the 86' and 88' 351 engines?
I have a rebuilt 351 from a fuel injected 88' f series I want to install in an 86' f150. The 86' f150 is carburated. Can I swap out intakes and fuel delivery components or are the engines completely different engines?
Same exact engine under the intake for all intents and purposes, the only possible difference is the cam if the '86 is an original 4bbl motor, then it has a HO cam versus the base cam in the '88 motor.
Yes the cylinder heads are a different casting number but that really doesn't affect anything, same number and location for all the bolts for the intake, timing cover/water pump, accessory brackets, etc... everything is transferable.
If your '86 has V-belts, you will have to reuse the timing chain cover and water pump off the '86. The serpentine belt on the '88 has a reverse rotation water pump.
I had to do this when I installed my '88 302 into my dad's '86.
