ID help 48-49 F-68

Been trying to decode the data plate but cant find any decent info online for these years, all I seem to be able to find is unorganized info that doesn't match up... anyone able to decode this or link to a site with a decent decoder?

Thanks
Scott

Thanks Julie for sending that, the info there is the same (obviously) as in my Canadian Parts Catalogue (Scott might want to get one!)

Scott, if I can help .....give me a shout, but I think Julie has you covered. Scott, could you put your location code in, please.

For anyone that cares (nobody) notice that the Canadian ID plate is held on with sheet metal screws, OEM from ford.

WOW a Canadian Parts Catalogue! I would love to see the front matter in that! Where can I get one?

Yeah those little sheet metal screws - didn't everyone have quite a discussion about rivets and screws on ID tags/rating plates some time back?

I got mine on fleabay.

AFAIK, there is no single bound catalog for Mercury Trucks that covers 1948/56 like the 1948/56 Ford Truck Parts Catalog does.

Which means, you have to buy each individual year Mercury Truck Parts Catalog. Good luck, cuz these don't show up very often.

You would be disappointed, a couple of typewriter type pages, no model illustrations and no model plate illustrations. Plate breakdown though. Not much for body parts. Covers 48-51.

Thanks for the site Julie, I seen that one but it doesnt have any info on the trim and paint codes, the organization of that site is pretty poor aswell. took a while to figure out what info was there.

Old F1, your little book wouldn't have that info would it? Didnt realize my location wasnt showing up with my username, fixed it now. I'm just east of Prince George.

I'd like to find similar info for my 52 M-1, as well. I've had very little luck finding any good decoding info for them on the web.

Old F1, would you be willing to share copies of the data tag info pages?

Scott, your paint color code is for Birch Gray.

Trim info hasn't been decoded or at least not passed along on the web. I've seen trim codes posted as M-18005 C, 13, 14 and 16 but I don't know what they represent. Canada used more variables for interiors than the US plants did.

One of you guys up north need to start compiling the info like Carl has done for US 48-50 serial numbers.

It seems Ford Canada got away from the M numbers in 52, for color codes. What can you do with paint code 88?

I don't have them Wayne, sorry.

I have recorded some of the numbers that guys have posted - like your 81 but I haven't seen corresponding colors to go with them.

Numbers I have include 24, 33, 41(noted as Sheridan Blue), 88 and 89

Are there any traces of original paint under the kick panels, behind the gas tank or under the dash, headliner, etc? If you find any please let me know.

Just to be clear, it's code 88, not 81. I'm not sure if you misread, or did a typo, but I wanted to be sure you had correct info.

I have a suspicion it was red with black fenders, but not yet positive. The firewall and interior, and even hidden areas like where the rubber filler goes at the back of the front fenders, to seal the cowl, are all a red oxide, which makes no sense, unless all of these areas have badly faded. I did cut away a chunk of the gas filler grommet, which revealed a shiny dark red, considerably darker than vermillion, but I've yet to see any color chip that would corrospond to it. More of a brick red. I don't know if Canada may have used different colors from US trucks.

The front fenders seem to be black underneath the nasty green. But again, still more research to do. I would like to validate the 2-tone thing by code, if that's possible.

I'm still working on getting my paperwork in order, before I can really tear into it. If I have to have it inspected, I want officials to see it in all it's original glory.

Oops, I was looking at body codes - 81,83, etc before typing that.

Ford US and I would think Ford Canada used red oxide primer on their metal. It seems like the two tone paint job was popular in Canada so that might account for your number.

I don't know if Ford of Canada can give you what you're looking for or not.

Sorry about the terrible quality of the picture, I do not have a flatbed scanner and I don’t know how else to do this.

………………….and I told you that you would be disappointed, there are some colors with no numbers and there is no number 88 listed, there is a 98 though………Dover Gray.
