i am trying to replace the water pump on a 92 f150 i6 and i cant get the fan off. i tried turning the nut but the fan bell just spins against the belt. i beat the **** out of the nut with a screwdriver and a hammer since 3:30 today and made no progress. i packed it in since it got dark, but i need to get this truck fixed. how do i get this fan off? its not opposite threads, is it?
If it's the 4 bolt flange I am thinking it is... use a prybar against the other bolt heads, wedged between the bolt heads and the fan mounting flange. Then use your wrench to crack all 4 bolts before removing them.
Excuse my speed drawing...

Reason: pic
i actually removed those 4 bolts first and i think it worked against me. now whenever i make any progress turning the fan nut, the belt "drum" turns without the actual water pump. it sounds weird but if you have done this before you will get what i am saying. i can use a clutch removal tool with the fan still in the motor and in front of the radiator?

IIRC, the "clutch removal tool" is simply a large, thin open end wrench, specifically designed to fit that nut. I think you're envisioning a three-jawed puller, or something similar, that would not fit between the fan and radiator, but that is not what this tool is--it's just a big wrench.
What are you referring to when you say "fan bell" (in your first post) and "belt drum" (above)?
the i-6 has the single nut spin on types fan if I'm not mistaken -the fan doesn't bolt on per say-it has it's own built on correct? I usually smack em with a cold chisel and a hammer on the edge of the big built on nut to loosen em -and I'm thinking some of em may be a reverse direction-it's late and my memory is bad

the 6 fan is all righty tighty.
to o.p. put those 4 bolts back in.
you can use a strap wrench on pulley and an open end wrench on nut.
hope you are protecting the radiator with cardboard.
i think i might use an air hammer to shake that nut loose. when i said "fan bell" and "belt drum", i was talking about the pulley. i couldnt think of the name. i really appreciate the help so far.
I've got a '91 4.9 that I want to get the fan & clutch removed from. What size wrench do I need to get that nut loosened? I see a couple references that indicate 40mm, but I'm also finding indications that the 40mm size only applies to '93+ applications.
Reading some more before posting this - looks like mine may be 36mm, yes?

Answering my own question, just confirmed with the caliper that it's 36mm. Looks to me like I can get a full size open-end wrench in there rather than one of those thin specialty wrenches. I'll go buy a 36mm wrench if that's the case - anyone know for sure if it'll get in there?
