Wink '99 F350 DRW rear pinion seal

My pinion seal is seeping some and it was replaced about 30k ago by Ford under warranty for the PO.
I bought a new seal from Ford and am going to have a local shop that I trust change it out.
I have been told that its best to also replace the crush sleeve at the same time but my guy says its not nessessary and sometimes installing a new crush sleeve makes things worse.
I just want to stop the seepage......any thoughts?

I have a SRW, which is a totally different animal back there. I re-used everything, counting the turns to take the nut off, adding about an 1/8th turn to put it back on. Yours just gets torqued down to a certain spec, and I was under the impression that you SHOULD replace the crush sleeve on those. The amount of correct torque is what crushes the sleeve.

Hopefully someone with a dually will chime in.

Roland and Rick just helped me replace mine...we did not replace the crush sleeve and i don't believe it is necessary unless there is changes to the ring gear or you remove the bearings. I know both Rick and Roland have done their's and did not replace it. I also changed the diff fluid to Royal Purple 75-140 and i actually think it quieted down some.

I'm sure Roland will buzz in here when he see's the thread.

The crush sleeve sets the pinion bearing preload and therefore shouldn't be replaced without removing the carrier so that the preload can be reset correctly
Care should be taken not to over torque the pinion nut
One thing to look for is wear on the pinion yoke where the seal rides,if there is wear here the seal can still leak

My seal has been weeping for about 120k miles, but don't think I have added a pint of fluid to it in that time,a ford dealer put a new carrier in about 5k miles before I noticed the leak

I have helped replace the rear pinion seal on several trucks, including Rick's, Jay's, and Jim's (megawatt00). The key things were to look at wear on the yoke's sealing surface, as mentioned, and retorque to nut to the proper value--470 ft-lbs. Unless the pinion bearings are worn, retorquing to this value will give you the proper preload for the bearings. Take it from me and these guys, 470 ft-lbs is a heck of alot. I sure the shop you use will do it right. He won't want any comebacks.
