Myself personally, the 5.4 is going to be enough but I mod everything I own and it would me making a bit more power than stock shortly after taking up residence in my driveway. For you the V10 is probably going to fit nice.
A. Because its in the superduty and they are just nicer trucks to have to drive for long hauls.
B. Gas mileage will not be that much different from one engine to the other. Not enough so that a K&N filter or intake, a tune, and better exhaust can't make up for.

and also it's a PIA to do a tune up on a 5.4 have to pull the fuel rail the ford dealership here gets $300 to do a tune up on one. were a 5.8/7.5 $60 bucks in parts and takes a half hour just food for thought general maintenance is much more expensive on the 5.4/6.8. btw most of the company's vehicles are 5.4l f-350 with 4.10's and they are dogs barely get out of their own way couldn't even imagine towing with one
As to the power thing, you ar entitled to you opinion, but even the 2Valve 5.4 has more HP then even your 460, wont argue torque with you, but the 5.8 engine is a gutless wonder compared to the 5.4 in stock form. Case in point. raced my friends truck with a 5.8. Now I have a 4X4 superduty with a 5.4, he ahs a 5.8 F150 4X4 short bed. I had 3 people in my truck, beat him by 2 car lengths, i outweigh that truck by an easy 2000 pounds.

I never heard of anyone who got such good mpg with the 5.8l and 7.5l in an F-series. My father had a 5.8l in a SC F-150 for quite a few years and didn't achieve the mpg posted here. Thing I don't like about the 80s and 90's F-series enignes is how corked up they were and all the emissions equipment they had just to pass emissions way back when. My 04' 6.8l only has 1 cat and no egr (hell the 302 in my 74' even has EGR), compare that to the 5.8l and 7.5l in the 90s.
Changing plugs on the modulars isn't too bad at all and like 92f150I6 said no cap/rotor, wires and etc to mess with. Th emodulars just have a short plug boot with a metal spring contact on the inside and one bolt lets the COP and the whole deal slide out.

if you are just pulling sleds, a 5.4 truck with 4.10 or 4.3 gears will do fine. So will a ranger with a 4.0
99-03 F250 with a v10 will get about 1 mpg worse than a 5.4 truck, and you will have the ability to pass people when pulling a trailer. Thats the diffrence.
I did not say this, and you did not hear it from this site, but the 2v v10 motors can get excellent mileage when the cats are removed. This is common knowledge around here and quite proven......

that helps out. I would love to get an 05 with a V10, but thats way out of my price range. I really like the 351/460's because they are easier to work on. What kind of gas mileage can be expected out of these engines in a ext cab long box 4wd truck? will the 460 or V10 get 10-14mpg?
I love my 460, but the thing has a real drinking problem.

my v-10 sees right at 9 mpg but thats in the city and i've changed to a better breathing exhaust and a better air filter, and i cant keep my foot out of it because the exhaust sounds cool as all get out. she's a head turner when fired up and running! by the by it gets close to 20 to 25 mpg on the highway.
