i got ford 78 350 dump, it has 360 engine in it, after i drive it, it wont start about 1 in 5 times, its seems like it has no starting power and battery goes dead- i replaced the solenoid, all new cables from the battery, the generator is working ok, the battery checked out good- i even had that checked twice, i cant figure out whats causing this- any ideas?- TIA
Sometimes the bushings wear out in the starter causing "armature drag". If you remove the starter, check the up and down play at the drive gear end of the starter.
The starter can be bad and cause this, but I would first verify that the solenoid is actually changing state or closing when the starter switch itself is activated.
In other words, if you do not hear the starter solenoid make a "click", then you may simply have a problem with the switch itself.
If the solenoid clicks every time the key is turned to the start position, and the starter does not enegage, then you know the problem is after the solenoid, but if you do not hear the solenoid pull in, then you can be sure that the problem is before the solenoid.
It is possible that the small lead on the solenoid itself has a bad connection. Those push on connectors do not do a real good job of making contact. Replacing the connecter with a ring style does a much better job.
