I finally found a 460 for my 77 f250 highboy. I got a 351m in right now. anyways the guy at the junkyard says the engine comes with everything except the starter, altenator, and power steering pump are these interchangable from the 351m? and can anynoe think of anything i else i should grab while there. Also how much does a dual electric radiator fan help compared to the big metal belt driven fans?
I was told the bellhousing was interchangable from the 351m. I am getting the mounts though made sure to tell them not to take a cutting torch to anything.
I'm pretty sure you'll need motor mounts. And you'll probably need a bellhousing to connect to your transmission. If I'm wrong, someone correct me.
351m and 460 take the same bellhousing. I did the 351 to 460 swap in my 1977 F-150. I bought mounts from L&L. Got an oil pan from a van, used L&L headers. Kept my 351m distributor and put it in the 460. Made my own accesory brackets. I used the power steering pump, alternator and starter from the 351m on my 460.
If you can get the accessory bracket from the 460, all your stuff from the 351M will bolt onto the 460 brackets. Bell housing as stated is the same , so is the starter. The frame motor mounts you will need to buy from a custom supplier (L&L were mentioned). You may want to upgrade the rad to a heavy duty 4 core, I did this exact swap years ago and that was my only trouble, it would overheat fast in the summer at idle.
Ok so im kinda strapped for cash atm (dont know when im not) but i have enough money for everything excpet possibly motor mounts what would be my cheapest way to go and what would be the best way to go because i can possibly just have my work purchase it and draw it from my paycheck.
No, you either need conversion mounts or I have heard that 390 mounts will work with the stock 351M/400 towers.
That would be good to know, first I heard of it. I have modified 460 engine mounts to work with 351/400 perches rather easily, but never heard of the 390 mount trick.
I took the 460 truck engine mount, cut the 2 sides off it so it looked like a 351 mount, drilled a hole down through the mount where the rubber is bonded to the steel. Welded in a 1/2' or 9/16th bolt in the hole and it fir perfectly into the 351 towers. Because of the extra power the engine did tend to roll in the mount and I had to chain it down on the left side . But I was pretty hard on it too.
Wow that doesnt sound to safe. I think for now ima try the modifying the 460 mounts. lol im so excited had this truck like amonth and havent been able to drive it yet. God im so tired of economy cars =P.
