Hi all, i read on yahoo that the F250 is considered to be in the cluncker catagory albeit the site didnt explain why.(Tink its called "the ten worst clunckers") In my corner of the world (South Africa) we sadly dont get much to do with the F series although im a HUGE fan. My question is if they have merrit and if so, is it just limmited to the F250? I mean what (built quality wise) could make it that much worse than the F350 ? I have always, from back in the day when they were common here, felt/thouhgt that the F250 is one of the F-series's best models.
I appreciate any wisdom on this.
"To be fair, Lincoln's MKS and Ford's F-250 have their problems--but Ford's sustained improvement and the breadth of its quality distinguish it from its Detroit-based counterparts. It all comes down to long-term planning vs. short-term financial gain, says Mike Quincy, an autos specialist at Consumer Reports who also maintains the CR blog.
"Detroit has always been obsessed with the short run," Quincy says. "They're like any Fortune 500 company [that says], 'We have to return shareholder value, we have to increase the stock price.' Well, there's a really big difference between increasing the stock price and making a really good quality car. Chrysler and General Motors haven't been able to wrap their arms around this."
My guess for the problems people supposedly have is they bought the cheapest Super Duty they could, a 3/4 ton, and then try and use it like a 1 ton or more then complain about it. In reality if there is a problem with the F250 there should be the same problems with the F350 and even F450 and 550 to a large degree. If there isn't or they aren't mentioning the whole line up they are either lying, clueless or using insufficient data.
I know, I don't think people that cant tell the difference between an F350 DRW and a F250 should not be doing editorials about cars/trucks, IMO.
I don't think they really know what they are writing about. Besides, do the kind of people who read "Forbes" magazine really buy that many trucks? Seems to me they are more the suit & tie / Honda ridgeline kind of people.
It sounds silly, but I read similar things on some car/truck review site a few weeks ago. Almost all of the guys who wrote a review raked the F250 in general and the V10 SD in particular over the coals. Not one positive thing was written in any of them. But I can say this much: in the short time I've owned my V10 F250, I'm more pleased with the truck every day, and I have never met an F250 owner who didn't love his truck, regardless of it being a diesel or gasser. Around here they seem to account for about 80% of all trucks I see and I figure that ain't by accident.
Data? C'mon we can't have people basing things on facts and data, now can we? The last owner of my '04 had exactly zero problems with the truck I now own and several other locals have also been in the 100% reliabilty club with their F250's. I freind of mine used to be the service writer for the local Ford dealership and he said that outside of some snapped exhaust studs on V10's many years ago an the occasional diesel problem, they never saw any F250/350's in for anything more than routine service.
6.0 problems and plug popping 5.4s contribute to the poor rating as far as I can tell on the CR site, as engine problems seem to dominate the ratings for several years, '03-'06. The more complete chart only has '00-'01 for a 2wd with (I assume) a gas engine, and "average" for a 4x4 gas. The diesel 4x4 dominates the rest of the data, with the engine, fuel, "drive system" (tc maybe?) and electrical falling down. Climate, suspension average. Transmissions good. Brakes, exhaust, paint, squeaks, body hardware, power equipment, audio, all very good.
CR reports what sample size they use, but I can't recall the numbers. They need a pretty good sample or they don't report. People with problems are more likely to report them, and engine problems (based on posts on the site) leave people foaming at the mouth ready to kill.
So, given the oil burner issues I read about (well, used to, I can't stand it anymore) HERE, I'm not surprised to see this vehicle tagged this way.
So, what this means is you find one that the owner has had trouble with, but fixed. You talk it down as unreliable. He rolls over, you get a great truck (with the problem fixed, we hope) for a low price.
The general opinion purty much reflects what i suspected. To single out the F250 as they did was rediculous. Great to hear all of ya SD owners, who actually know what you talking about, seems to agree on the pedegree of the truck. Sure no vehicle is perfect but the SD seems to be close (sans some 6.0 PS issues..) Thanks for the feedback guys

It's all good.....
I am a member of CR and listed both my MKZ and 99 F-250 diesel with them. Most years I get a questionaire via email that ask questions about both auto. They get some or most of their data from these questionaires. The last several years we have not recieved any more on my diesel so I assume they have enough data for that model. We still get the MKZ.
Hmmm OK,,what the Heck is wrong with a 99' F-250 with a 7.3 engine ??
I my `99, absolutely nothing (on the engine) with 130,000 miles. I noted all the other stuff that when wrong over the time I recieved the questionaire from CR for the F-250.
