So I did a search and got a little confused, because I couldnt find one that really showed what I was looking for. So here it is, I have a 1979 f150 351m performer 400 intake manifold, edelbrock 650 cfm carb, i dont know if i have a cam or not, so what is the largest/best size exhaust piping to use? right now i have 2.25 dual 40 series flowmasters with stock manifolds, i was gonna wait to order headers until i figured out what size exhaust piping was a good choice. ill most likely be ditching the flowmasters for either borlas or aero turbines.
There are quite a few variables there, but th concern is that you dont already have headers. Headers should be first, and then you can select a tube size based upon the collector diameter. I highly doubt that you will find headers that have anything much larger than a 3" collector. Perhaps you can find some 3.5" collectors, but the primary tube will be so large, that the stock engine will not move enough air or have the velocity to make it run well, and it will be a pig.
3" will be about as large as you want to go, but you might get away with leaving the 2.25 inch stuff for a while.
Considering the stock (big assumption) cam, you wont really require or benifit from a larger diameter exhaust. You may actually slow the air speed to the poinit where your system becomes inefficient. Tru some good quality headers with a conservatibve tube diameter, and then work your way up. 2.5" might be the max I would attempt, though 3 inch might sound nice, Im just concerned about that darn air speed.
Example:
My 521 only uses a header with a 3" collector, and a 3" mandrel bent system:
I plan to get headers, i was just waiting to figure out what size exhaust to get so i would know how much i would need to save up so i could get my headers installed and exhaust done all at the same time.
if i run 2.5 in to my mufflers, and then 3 inch tail pipes will that cause a power loss? i get conflicting friendly arguments about it. my reason for asking is a friend ran that set up on his 08' silverado and i liked the sound of his flowmasters after putting on 3 inch tail pipes.
